In this British crime caper, Hyde (Jack Hawkins), a bitter former military officer, decides to rob a bank and recruits a number of ex-army men to join in on the scheme. Along with Lexy (Richard Attenborough), Race (Nigel Patrick) and others, Hyde meticulously plans the heist, with preliminary missions resulting in tense and ridiculous situations, including a quest for much-needed explosives. Once Hawkins has assembled his far from magnificent seven and his intricate plan begins to unravel, the action really hots up. Go to Full Review

The film lacks a strong centre and a firm point of view -- one is never quite sure how seriously the parody of the officer code is intended, especially in the ambiguous, obligatorily moral ending. Go to Full Review

... a sturdy and meticulous heist film built on an appreciation of teamwork, camaraderie and hard work: a professional work about professionals working. Go to Full Review

The League of Gentlemen is a fine example of old-fashioned English humor: droll and civil. Go to Full Review

Ron S Mar 25, 2018 Entertaining heist film. Watch for a quick bit from Oliver Reed.
George G Apr 14, 2017 Nearly superb and richer than chocolate mousse.
Ron R Jan 24, 2016 A solid early British heist caper (from 1960, rather than 1959 as listed on RT) starring the great Jack Hawkins. The humour may be a little subtle and the pace a bit stately for some modern audiences, but if you're a fan of old fashioned British stiff upper lip and daring-do, then this will be up your street. The tone is surprisingly dark in places and there are more sexual references than you might expect from the period, including a gay character, who is treated broadly sympathetically, but whose sexuality is treated here as a guilty secret (male gay sex was illegal in the UK until 1967). The main cast is strong, particularly Hawkins and Patrick, who share most of the best lines between them. It also features a brief and very camp bit-part from a young and then unknown Oliver Reed. Certainly worth a couple of hours of your time. See more
