Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapaport (Seth Rogen) are the team behind the popular tabloid-TV show "Skylark Tonight." After learning that North Korea's Kim Jong-un (Randall Park) is a huge fan of the show, they successfully set up an interview with him, hoping to legitimize themselves as actual journalists. However, as Dave and Aaron prepare for their journey to Pyongyang, the CIA steps in, recruits them, and assigns them an incredible mission: Assassinate the dictator.

Critics Consensus

Unfortunately overshadowed by controversy (and under-screened as a result), The Interview's screenplay offers middling laughs bolstered by its two likable leads.

Even the film's most ardent champions would likely concede that The Interview is a spectacularly weird film to end up at the center of a free speech brouhaha.

It's funny and strange, with an admirably gonzo sensibility, and it approaches the job of mocking Kim with the appropriate degree of joy-buzzer delight.

The suffocating level of redundancy on display kneecaps any legitimate chance the film had at embracing social satire.

A funny, silly, stupid comedy that will make some people laugh, others not so much. Any response beyond that is an overreaction.

The Interview will impress many when the mood turns serious, but these faux-moments of shrewdness come only after the non-stop, over-the-top antics from James Franco.

If you want a real envelope-pushing, controversial, yet uproariously funny movie in your life right now, then go seek out (or revisit) the truly anarchic Team America: World Police.

Its totally ridiculous. Like totally. I mean, Kim Jong Un would definitely not be a Katy Perry fan in real life.

Not a particularly strong outing for the fellas over at Point Grey (i.e. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Franco, etc.), "The Interview" is an undoubtedly sloppy effort on a number of fronts. Comedically speaking, it's average, offering up some intermittent laughs here and there, but no genuine gut-busters. As a piece of political or journalistic commentary, it's scattershot at best, with most of its thematic content posing more questions than answers in the heads of the audience members. However, I can't say it wasn't worth at least one watch. The premise alone is worth the price of admission. And regardless of whether or not it ultimately excelled at delivering on that possibilities of that premise, I'm -- at the very least -- glad I finally got around to watching it.

One of my favorite comedies. Seems odd how this got such a low rating. Must've been the time when it was released, or lack of special effects, because this movie is hilarious. Zooey Deshanel was perfect for the CIA agent -- kinda wish they'd use has as one in other movies.
