In 1939, newly created British intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma -- which cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing's team, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyze Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgrace when authorities reveal he is gay and send him to prison.

Critics Consensus

With an outstanding starring performance from Benedict Cumberbatch illuminating its fact-based story, The Imitation Game serves as an eminently well-made entry in the "prestige biopic" genre.

What could have been a very dry and earnest film emerges, under the intelligent direction of Norwegian Morten Tyldum working from a screenplay by Graham Moore, as a gripping and still rather extraordinary story. Go to Full Review

'The Imitation Game' is as dated about its politics as it is about its filmmaking. Where it should have been brave, bold and pioneering, it's clunky, squeamish and ultimately forgettable. Go to Full Review

The Imitation Game takes too many dramatic liberties in adapting for the screen but at the end of the day, the film does help right a wrong in recognizing the code-breakers--including Alan Turing--for their work during World War II. Go to Full Review

Han S Apr 26, 2019 i thought this was a pretty good movie
Han R Apr 23, 2019 Turing's is a classic tragedy, a cold hero destroyed by the mechanisms of an even colder universe; and while his historic achievement is grippingly told, with his neurotic personality aptly embodied by Cumberbatch playing into type, that latter strength is also the film's most damning failure. Whether as Sherlock or Strange, Cumberbatch excels at portraying an uebermensch figure, whose inscrutable genius and impenetrable self-confidence allow his characters to do what no one else can, will, or should. As played by Cumberbatch, Turing is more than a mathematical prodigy and oddity of a man: Contrary to the standard stereotype, he is also a dedicated athlete running before it was fashionable and a imperious leader who does what must be done, criticisms be damned. Physically fit, intellectually superior, morally domineering: This sound less like a gay crossword puzzle enthusiast than it does the Nazi ideal; late in the film, Turing even demands the right to choose who will die in the war and who will be saved by his algorithms, a fascist wet dream. In this sense, which is admittedly quite Zizekian at bottom, the audience is allowed to enjoy what a dictatorial jerk Turing acts like, is permitted and even encouraged to emotionally buy into the uebermensch fantasy, because on the surface, he is treated as an outsider to the system on account of his queerness, while on a deeper level, he is really an outsider because he is a cryptofascist within the ranks of the Allied forces. Harry S Apr 20, 2019 Excellent direction, dazzling acting and memorable OST. The movie that ciments Cumberatch as the default "lost genius" actor after his role in Sherlock. See more
Ron W Mar 29, 2019 This movie was masterfully done. I wasn't aware of the Enigma until watching this film, but after watching it I went down the deepest rabbit hole on cryptography and ciphers that a human can probably go. I mean, I was reading so much I finally realized why Nicolas Cage felt compelled to steal the Declaration of Independence. The story was so powerful, I will caveat that statement with the fact that I'm a HUGE WWII nerd, Alan Turing is such an incredible influence to technology and his exploration of the medium in a time where people weren't exploring that field is absolutely inspiring. I loved the film and thought that Benedict Cumberbatch did an amazing job, his portrayal came across as believable and genuine. It shows a very important part of both the technology and its importance and the social aspects of what was happening at the time. I hope that more people will choose to watch this film because it truly is an important piece. See more
Mar 12, 2019 The first half is superb, with excellent direction from Tyldum. Cumberbatch 's performance is obviously breathtaking, nuanced yet packed with fragility. Even Knightley put in a superb turn, especially in that final scene. Overall, though, this biopic too, just many others like I've seen, falls a little flat at the end. Maybe it was just me who felt that the film began slowing down once they had cracked Enigma. It had built itself on the basis of events coming one after another, before it transitioned into this slow, emotional second half that worked, but just couldn't match the first half for me. Overall, though, this is still an excellent film for bringing to light the greater story behind one man's supposed eccentricities. See more
Draco R Feb 26, 2019 A truly fascinating and extremely interesting story. Try All-Star car really stepped up and performed in this masterpiece. It sheds the light on work which many people may not of heard of from Turing and his team during WW2, which ultimately won the allies the war. This is a prime example of everything a drama should be. Highly recommend See more
