What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Hollars gathers an impressive assortment of talented stars; unfortunately, it's all in service of a story that's been played out more effectively in countless other indie dramedies.

Krasinski, who also directed the film, may have spread himself too thin; there's a desperation about the closing scenes, cluttered as they are with bouncy pop songs on the soundtrack. Go to Full Review

Opening with a promising first act comprising well-observed, edgy humor, the film ends with an overdose of treacle so syrupy, so pungent, it will unsettle the strongest tummy. Go to Full Review

Ron L Jan 4, 2019 The big problem with this movie is that so many things the characters do feels manufactured and not at all real. There are many scenes in the first half that are cringe inducing (many of those involving the brother). For every moment that produces genuine emotion, there's one right after that which feels false. I wish this had been better because there are a lot of people I like in it. See more
Dec 8, 2018 so many real moment. I don't understand how can someone give it a bad review.
Ron P Oct 17, 2018 Good natured, family drama that's touching at points, worth a watch but nothing too special.
Han L Oct 8, 2018 A really sweet film. Love John Krasinski!
Kylo W Sep 5, 2018 Humorously written and tenderly performed, this yet another addition to the tired genre of dysfunctional family comedy is a welcome reminder that while we cannot choose our family, we can choose humour to be our therapist. See more
Leia L Aug 30, 2018 Now that John Krasinski (Jim from "The Office") has become critically acclaimed behind the camera for his recent work with "A Quiet Place", I wanted to take a look back at some of his earlier pieces that no one really knows existed. Regardless of the ratings from the fans and critics on this site, my wife and I found it be very down to earth and small school charming. John also stars as the key character, also named John, who has to head back to his little home town and his somewhat estranged family after news breaks that his mother has been diagnosed with a severe brain tumor. Regardless of the downtrodden concept, shenanigans ensue as he reconnects with his neurotic father (Richard Jenkins), his also borderline unstable brother (Sharlto Copley), and a mother who is the least screwed up in the head of anybody for how much is physically wrong with it (Margo Martindale). Nice support in a suitably dramedic sense from Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Anna Kendrick, The Hollars comes across as deeply relatable smile-piece and fueled along by a perfectly tuned soundtrack that tickles around the heart & soul.
