Lee Hayden is a Western icon with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him. He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking too much weed with his former co-star-turned-dealer, Jeremy, until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus. He soon strikes up an exciting, contentious relationship with stand-up comic Charlotte, and he attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Lucy, all while searching for one final role to cement his legacy.

The Hero

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Hero rests on Sam Elliott's understated performance, which proves more than capable of carrying the film through the less inspired moments of its somewhat clichéd story.

Quiet, personal and refreshingly introspective. Go to Full Review

It's one of his finest and most memorable performances. Unfortunately, the script fails to rise to the level of Elliott's artistry. Go to Full Review

Two good things are not enough to goose this all-too-familiar tale of a selfish man who wakes up one day, realizes that he blew it and scrambles to fix it before it's too late. Go to Full Review

The Hero is a sublime epistle to the silver screen specter cast by Sam Elliott. Go to Full Review

While the film is a journeyman effort, The Hero's love for Elliott shines through in every scene. If you want to see an oft-supporting player get his due, this is the film. Go to Full Review

Sam Elliott is in almost every frame, bringing an easy charm that solidifies his leading man status while smoothing over the film's rough patches. Go to Full Review

Han S Feb 3, 2019 This is not a fast-paced film, but my wife and I simultaneously shared how much we liked the DIRECTION and cinematography. Sam Elliott's performance was great. Laura Prepon was adept at walking the "believability" tightrope (needing to seem mature enough for the possibility of a relationship with a man twice her age) while lighting up the scene, Sam's heart (and mine). Emotive, reflective, quality filmmaking. It was the best film we've seen in a while. See more
Kylo W Dec 14, 2018 This film is predictable, but Sam Elliot is brilliant.
Han S Dec 2, 2018 Really enjoyed it . For many reasons ... Elliot , pace , etc
Harry G Nov 6, 2018 It was quite a boring movie I'm afraid and I wasn't much impressed by the performance either. Felt more like a Sunday afternoon TV movie. Nothing much to offer and very forgettable. See more
Kylo S Oct 28, 2018 Honest and emotional but unfortunately too boring for anyone to care. The Hero rests solely on Sam Elliot's commendable performance and although there's a few nice moments to get you through to the end, this drama is hardly enjoyable. See more
Abraham L Oct 25, 2018 Both a tribute to and curtain call by the great Sam Elliot. I feel that once Sam moves on one day, those that loved him will look first to this film as a means to reminisce. See more
