What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though this by-the-numbers true procedural seems basic, The Frozen Ground presents a welcome return for Nicolas Cage in a solid performance.

You’ll still find the tension has you gripping your seat, thanks to the taut cat and mousery between ol’ Con Air co-stars Cusack and Cage. Go to Full Review

"The Frozen Ground" trucks in cliche, as most serial killer and police procedural films do, but the strength of the acting (from the leads down to people with only one or two lines) helps ground the film. Go to Full Review

Rey P Mar 30, 2019 Strengths: I liked the way the plot throughout this movie unfolded. There wasnâ(TM)t any mystery to it, since we knew the killer from the start. However, youâ(TM)re left on the edge of your seat trying to find out if this guy would get away with it all. He came close several times. Nicolas Cage (Jack Halcombe) has become something of a joke but every once in a while, he reminds you that he is an Academy Award winning actor. He does some of his best work in this movie. The true scene stealer is Vanessa Hudgens (Cindy Paulson). She portrays the broken prostitute very well. Itâ(TM)s an emotional performance where she has to be very vulnerable. Sheâ(TM)s a frustrating character, which is what she should be because sheâ(TM)s been through so much. John Cusack (Robert Hansen) is also solid as the sadistic killer/rapist. Weaknesses: Though the performances are strong, the characters are quite thin. Thereâ(TM)s nothing unique about them and they never get much time to develop. They are also full of clichà (C)s. In fact, the plot is riddled with those. While the movie is based on a true story, they could have done a few things that werenâ(TM)t typical in the genre. Iâ(TM)ve never seen a Scott Walker movie before, but he didnâ(TM)t seem too great as a director. Thereâ(TM)s nothing about any of this that feels special or unique. Overall: A mostly generic thriller that gets lifted up by some really good acting from the three leads. A handful of tense moments also helps. See more
George G Jan 22, 2019 A watchable 'based on actual events' thriller, with Alaska as the stunning wintry backdrop. Frozen Ground gives Nicolas Cage his best role in years, despite a lack of originality in the script. No slush here. See more
Rey R Aug 31, 2018 Glad I ignored the average reviews and watched. The story and acting were excellent. I really liked how it showed it took instinct and initiative by a good street cop who had to go over another trying to block further investigation. He then sends information to the state police and that investigator (Cage) also has to persist in the face of others trying to stop the investigation while also protecting the girl who escaped the killer. These are two amazing men and it's a great story about the strong young girl/woman with the outstanding survival instincts who escaped a serial killer. See more
Jul 11, 2018 255. The Frozen Ground. Nic Cage in a serial killer movie, sounds awesome right? Well, it was just ok. First Mr. Cage was not the killer, so no over the top murder scenes...oh well. It is a true story about Robert Hansen, a friendly ordinary guy, sure he's a little odd, has a nervous stutter around people, but he's well respected in the community, he's married with kids, and in his spare time he loves to go picking up prostitutes, torture them for a few days, then whisk them off in his own 2 seater airplane, for a trip to his Alaskan cabin in the woods, where he hunts them down like deer, yea he's a douche. Hansen is played by John Cusack, he wasn't bad as the creeper, I think it might come natural for him. Cage plays the cop, Jack, on the verge of retirement, but stays on for this last one case. One of Hansen's would be victims escapes and it's Jack's job to help Cindy remember all the gory details to nail this bastard to the wall... And its that part of the movie thats the weakest link, Cindy is played by Vanessa Hudgens, blah, and her pimp is played by Curtis Jackson... aka 50 Cent, mumbling his way through dialogue... Overall tho...hmm a decent more R rated Lifetime serial killer movie :) Filmbufftim on FB. See more
Luke S Jun 13, 2018 Much better than I expected based on reviews.... Yes, there were a few twee moments... but it's sort of like going to a good restaurant and liking everything you have except the stuffed mushrooms... yes, some moments were cliched, but the movie as a whole is engaging, and the story it tells is compelling... and the acting by Nicholas Cage, Vanessa Hudgens, and John Cusack are quite worth watching... And the story is both exciting and heartrending. See more
Theodore G Mar 17, 2018 Not a great film. One of the better Nicholas Cage recent films.
