To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America try a radical sociological experiment that allows citizens to vent their aggression for one night in an isolated community. The idea soon explodes across the nation when the violence of the oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized.

Critics Consensus

The First Purge should satisfy fans of the franchise and filmgoers in the mood for violent vicarious thrills, even if its subtextual reach exceeds its grasp.

Unfortunately the characters are so poorly written that the political provocations hang in the air like birthday balloons.

It's efficiently done. It's quite grueling. And what I like about it is that central idea... It's solid.

The Purge films are B-movies, and so this ultraviolence mostly works, though its social commentary is served a little too rare to stomach easily.

I could turn my brain off in the beginning, but I felt like a mindless zombie halfway throughout the movie. Nothing really resonated with me.

The entertainment value is about the same as before, failing to change up the formula to a worthwhile degree – even if the finale (disappointingly doused in CG blood effects and largely repetitive) is appropriately action-packed and bloodthirsty.

Started an account just to help sway people from wasting an hour of their life. This is the worst movie I have seen in awhile. I can't believe someone greenlight this garbage.

At first I enjoyed the film (first 15-30 minutes) until the obvious racism propaganda, tired of Hollywood trying to dictate agendas they know nothing about...

Maybe some of the character arcs could have been combined...it was corny in parts, but in the end I enjoyed it

Nothing happened for the first hour...

This is the most contrived trash I've ever seen. Full of SJW pandering moments obviously planted to get one or two positive reviews from sheep. Then to top it off they include sci-fi esque gunplay and fight choreography that makes some B movies look professional. I literally started laughing when the protagonist drug dealers started shooting in a style similar to that of the gun-kata from Equilibrium. Literally every white character in the movie is a villain minus some extras seen in a massive "purge party" held in the middle of the street. As a black male I find this pandering to be incredibly offensive.

Another really badly done movie where white people are the bad guys. (Is this the reason the Hollywood critics liked it so much?) Completely a waste of time (although we didn't even finish watching it -- gave up after less than an hour.
