For Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), boxing is a family affair. His tough-as-nails mother is his manager. His half-brother, Dicky (Christian Bale), once a promising boxer himself, is his very unreliable trainer. Despite Micky's hard work, he is losing and, when the latest fight nearly kills him, he follows his girlfriend's advice and splits from the family. Then Micky becomes a contender for the world title and he -- and his family -- earns a shot at redemption.

Both Wahlberg and Bale are excellent in their different registers, as are Melissa Leo and Amy Adams as the differently calibrated women. Go to Full Review

While at its core, The Fighter does become a predictable boxing comeback film building to that Hollywood ending, the performances and acting clinic in action are worth your attention and audience. Go to Full Review

Bale, Leo, and Adams are exceptional, and Russell’s ability to imbue a conventional underdog premise with his high-strung eccentricities gives the film a unique texture. Go to Full Review

The film falls somewhere between bare-knuckle and blue collar, brought to the screen with that docu-style handheld-camera that indie filmmakers so love to use for bracing reality, and Irish family melodrama... Go to Full Review

Anakin W Feb 8, 2019 i dont usually watch boxing movies but this was made really well acting was top notch, very believable transitions from one scene to the next were some of the best ive seen in any movie sound effects were great overall storyline was good too character development was pretty good for most characters ending seemed like it might have ended too fast, felt like there was one more act or at least a bit more of a closing overall this movie was really good, people can definitely find some inspiration from this movie See more
Theodore G Jan 27, 2019 This film made a sad, grim culture seem quite charming with odd direction and compelling, determined performances. Amy Adams and Christian bale were unrelenting and their characters' single scene together was my favourite in the whole film. Wahlberg's performance felt weakest as it was fairly static but that might just reflect the real life personality it was based on and the cliched story arc of his character. The way the group of sisters behaved in the film had quite a 'Greek chorus' vibe, highlighting the absurd family dynamic while inviting audiences into the fold. See more
Poe W Jan 5, 2019 A great movie, and quite possibly a future classic. There isn't any other way to put it, The Fighter is just a great movie. It's a mix of family drama and sports adrenaline. And it's very interesting, very entertaining, very dramatic and it's boosted by three killer performances by Christian Bale, Mark Walhberg and Amy Adams, no wonder they deserved several Oscars. And the boxing scenes are amazing, breath-taking and extremely suspenseful and well done. It's the type of movie that makes you feel good and even victorious in the end, as you associate with the character. Overall, this is a fun must-see. Recommended!! See more
Hagrid G Dec 24, 2018 A really great boxing film. Loved it.
Jun 18, 2018 Uniquely written, floundering back and forth between drama and comedy, then depressing, yet optimistic. Christian Bale displays one of the finest acting performances I've ever seen. Although pieces of it played out as too Hollywood, especially the ending, it was beautifully shot and very entertaining. See more
Han R Dec 27, 2017 Great film, Bale at his best and Walberg less annoying than usual.
