What to Know

Critics Consensus

It makes good on the old-school action it promises, but given all the talent on display, The Expendables should hit harder.

The Expendables is more than just your average action movie; it is the action movie of the year uniting the grittiness and soul of the old genre with the special effects and coolness of the new genre. See it. Go to Full Review

Despite the all-star cast of action movie icons, headlined by Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, the movie stumbles with a conventional and predictable narrative that relies too heavily on clichés. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Delivers precisely what it promises: which is to say the cinematic equivalent of a rocket fuel-laden tanker truck plowing into the mixing room of a nitroglycerine factory. Go to Full Review

The Truth In Advertising award for 2010 went to The Expendables, which employs (however unintentionally) its own title to push the fact that this is a disposable action film. Go to Full Review

Draco G Mar 6, 2019 The Expendables is a action film directed by Sylvester Stallone. Steady acting from some of the best Acton stars in cinema. Very fun and cool characters especially the Expendables. Good chemistry between the Expendables. Quick and shaky cinematography that fits with the action. Nice settings with the city to the castle. Good set design and props with the weapons and the buildings. Fitting costumes whether it be casual or military outfits. Good style with the colour scheme and shad that makes it feel like a gritty movie. Exemplary practical effects with the rare mess up. Good special effects, most of the time. Very fun and quick and action that can be tense. Good sound design. Quotable dialogue like you a size 3. Steady editing. Music that fits the scenes. Okay story but thats not why you watch this film. Good comedy between the characters. The atmosphere was dark and cool. The film was also really enjoyable. The cast was one of the best parts about this movie with Stallone to Lundgren. Over all the film is a feel good and cool movie 6/10 They may not be the best actors but by god do they no how to put on a show See more
Rey L Mar 6, 2019 This movie is great, the action, the comedy, the cast, it all makes an amazing action movie.
Poe G Jan 13, 2019 THE EXPENDABLES assembles the best action cast ever made, and thrills its audiences with fights, chases and explosions. THE EXPENDABLES might not show anything us anything that we haven't already seen, but you can't deny that it's just dumb fun.... See more
Harry M Sep 29, 2018 All the effort went into the action.
Abraham L Sep 17, 2018 Strengths: The entire appeal of this movie was a combination of the cast and their history of action movies. Most of the cast are used quite well. Sylvester Stallone (Barney Ross), Jason Statham (Lee Christmas), and Eric Roberts (James Munroe) seem to get most of the key scenes. Roberts is fun as the villain, while Stallone and Statham play well off each other. I dug the fight scene between Jet Li (Yin Yang) and Dolph Lundgren (Gunner Jensen). It was creative and played so well off the tall vs. short dynamic. Most of the action is solid. I got a kick out of the scene where Statham beats up a bunch of dudes at a basketball court for hitting the woman he loves, played by Charisma Carpenter (Lacy). The scene with Bruce Willis (Mr. Church) and the Arnold Schwarzenegger (Trench Mauser) cameo was also fun. Weaknesses: I wanted one of the wildest action movies in history. While most of it was good, it never packed the punch I wanted it to. If you're being hyped and advertised as having all these massive action stars, do that. They failed to deliver something memorable. None of the characters really felt cool and that was mostly because they were trying too hard to be cool. Look at the tattoos, the motorcycles, the outfits, etc. It's as if they saw things from their past that were cool and forced them onto everyone. Some characters felt like clichés, especially Yang. Terry Crews (Hale Caesar) and Steve Austin (Dan Paine) felt underused. Meanwhile, Giselle Itie (Sandra) gets too much screen time and isn't interesting enough to deserve it. Overall: For being billed as a major action flick, there's no reason this should be as boring as it is. With stronger action, better sue of certain characters, and less attempts to try to be cool, it could've worked. See more
Hermione W Sep 5, 2018 One of the best Action movies of the 2010s decade, Stallone, Stone Cold & Jet Li! what a cast, this flick just gets the tone right, nailed it. Sly's directing pays homage to old school Action flicks of the 80s & 90s. See more
