Gen. Aladeen (Sacha Baron Cohen) has ruled the oil-rich North African country of Wadiya since the age of six, when 97 stray bullets and a hand grenade killed his father in a hunting accident. After an assassination attempt takes the life of yet another body-double, Tamir (Ben Kingsley), Aladeen's uncle and most trusted adviser, convinces Aladeen to go to New York. Unfortunately, Aladeen has a less-than-friendly reception from exiled Wadiyans, who want their country freed from his despotic rule.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Wildly uneven but consistently provocative, The Dictator is a decent entry in the poli-slapstick comedy genre.

I think I can feel it disappearing from my mind even as I am trying to remember it... It's Baron Cohen going at 50mph rather than 100mph. Go to Full Review

The problem is that, unlike Ali G, Borat, and Brno, Aladeen is less a force of nature than a scripted performance. Go to Full Review

Laughs are few and far between, which comes as a surprise given how Borat and Brüno managed to be two of the most riotously funny movies you’ll ever see. Go to Full Review

Overall The Dictator lacks the wit, invention and spontaneity of Baron Cohen's earlier work... Go to Full Review

The over saturation of marketing stunts certainly didn't help the appeal but politically and comedically you'll find more to think about and laugh at during a single half hour on The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. Go to Full Review

Leia S Mar 16, 2019 One of the best comedy movies ever <3
Hagrid W Oct 31, 2018 Am i the only one that wants a sequel? funniest movie I have ever seen on boxxy software !
Draco R Sep 21, 2018 Sacha Baron's comedic style has always been very much to throw everything at the audience and see what hits. In the Dictator this style produces some spectecular misses, some so bad they will likely put some audience members off the film all together , but overall the hits outnumber the misses and many of them had me laughing out load. A feat not many comedies have managed to do in recent years. See more
Hagrid G Sep 1, 2018 The film was funny, and had many great ideas going for it, the opening scenes were done perfectly and the first act was a great set-up that seemed as if it would be leading up to a fun and unique comedy. However, when the film progressed, we saw nothing new happening, the characters seemed all over the place and there were many confusing elements that just made the plot so much more complicated. When going to the ending sequence, I felt a sense of catharsis, as it seemed as if the film was going back to its original idea. Comparing the beginning and ending, the characters have grown and the film seemed like it was delivered nicely. However, with the middle acts being such a mess, it is hard to forget how the execution of this idea went terribly wrong. See more
Hermione W Aug 29, 2018 It makes literally no sense, but is quite funny.
Jun 18, 2018 As a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, I respect his talent and genius. And as a fan of vulgar, over the top comedy, I respect that Cohen would pursue a movie like "The Dictator.". However, when you are as talented as Cohen and get the opportunity to follow up your past successful creations with a solid Hollywood budget and studio support from Adam McKay, Larry Charles, Alec Berg, etc., don't throw together a limp, directionless, hit-or-miss collection of "shock and awe". Cohen needs to take the lead from Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Vulgar comedy is at its most brilliant when it's constructed into a tight, well-written story. There were extremely funny scenes, but occasionally brilliant scenes do not make a brilliant comedy. "The Dictator," as constructed, should have never been made. See more
