Critics Consensus

The Children Act showcases yet another powerful performance from Emma Thompson, who elevates this undeniably flawed picture into an affecting adult drama.

Emma Thompson once again proves she's our finest actress working today. The power of the film is diluted slightly by an insistence of adherence to the source but the fine performances shine through. Go to Full Review

This is a film that poses important moral and legal questions, but it's also a personal story in which a diligent woman, who regularly faces intense criticism, has to confront several deeply troubling personal problems. Go to Full Review

The Children Act is a mature and thoughtful film that is, above all, a wonderful showcase for a brilliant Emma Thompson. Go to Full Review

It toys with your emotions, but never enough to make you care too much about the main character. Perhaps this is the point; to keep the audience at a cold distance, mimicking the barrier of law that Fiona Maye uses to protect herself... Go to Full Review

A simple story about a senior judge's decision against the backdrop of her grinding-to-a-halt marriage made more complex because of the consequences. A film which will make you think about your world, instead of escape from it. Go to Full Review

The first half sets a fundamental picture of elegance and nuanced complexity. However, it's second act wanes in this momentum, it almost feels like there is a big chunk of an essential storyline missing to complete a fulfilling centrepiece. Go to Full Review

Kylo L Apr 17, 2019 A very lovely movie, Emma Thompson is really brilliant.
Han M Apr 5, 2019 Emma Thompson owns this film with a stellar performance but the key relationship with the young man in poorly constructed. While I enjoyed the book more the film deserves praise for tackling such difficult questions in a confronting way. See more
Rey G Mar 26, 2019 This film deals with a compelling, serious issue, and some of the characters are interesting stand-ins for modern, upper-class citizens but it just wasnâ(TM)t that great. Sorry. See more
Harry G Feb 22, 2019 While the pacing of the film is deliberate and purposefully slow and tense - I kept waiting for *something* to happen. I'm not sure anything did. See more
Theodore S Feb 12, 2019 Emma Thompson plays a High Court judge who presides over cases of family law. Her career has taken a toll on her marriage which is at the point of breaking. As this occurs she is also handed one of the most challenging cases of her career, the case of a Jehovah's Witness who several months before his 18th birthday is refusing a blood transfusion which could save his life. She visits the hospital to try and understand if this is the boy's true feelings or if he is under the influence of his parents or members of his church. The meeting has a profound effect on both of them which has far reaching consequences om their personal lives. Emma Thompson's performance was superb as a judge who is struggling to keep out the emotional implications of her latest case while battling her own emotional trauma in her private life. Fionn Whitehead was also very good as the young man battling with his devotion to his God and his own mortality. Not a cheery film, but one that will no doubt spark debate and make you think of the rights and wrongs and an individual's choice to control their own fate. See more
Poe S Jan 16, 2019 A bit of a better attempt at an Ian McEwan adaptation than the rather dire Chesil Beach, but, on the whole, a rather average, going through the motions British film. Emma Thompson does a professional job, but I didn't get emotionally involved with the fate of the poorly lad. See more
