Critics Consensus

The Chaperone is inspired by a potentially interesting real-life story, but loses its sharpest and timeliest angles in the telling.

All the corny romance stuff is about as intrinsic to the film’s soft appeal as the scrupulously well-made frocks, encompassing late Edwardian lace and flapper-style dropwaist numbers, and dozens of well-turned cloche hats. Go to Full Review

If "The Chaperone" accomplishes anything, that will be to send viewers scrambling to Google to learn more about this extraordinary woman. Go to Full Review

I'm not an Elizabeth McGovern completist, but it may be the best thing she's ever done. Go to Full Review

Going into this film, I expected a typical stoic period piece, only to be emotionally riveted by the unfolding story. Go to Full Review

Neither of their stories seems essential as a record of Hollywood history, but combined there's something captivating as the film weaves tales of lost innocence and shifting morals. Go to Full Review

Hermione M Apr 27, 2019 Elizabeth McGovern plays the chaperone with style and grace... A rare look into the world of the 1920s for women and a beautiful depiction of women of different generations and personalities helping and encouraging one another. Take your daughter. See more
Abraham G Apr 27, 2019 The Chaperone is vastly underrated by the critics. Four of us went to this movie, and we all rated it at least 8 out of 10 points. Based on a true story, this movie deals with how relevant issues today, such as adoption, homosexuality, sexual abuse, economic dependence, and racial issues, were also issues in 1922, but obviously dealt with differently. Ron L Apr 21, 2019 I thought the movie was superb. And part of that greatness was due to the fact that it covered a sliver of the life of one of the more amazing actresses that film has ever known - but so few know about today. Just take the time and watch some old film clips of Louise Brooks and you'll see what I mean: She had a hauntingly "today" look - even back in the twenties. For my money, she put Garbo to shame - and this film brought to life a piece of that enigmatic spirit in a most sensitive and hauntingly provocative way. See more
Apr 20, 2019 Superb movie about the many "corsets" we ALL wear, that hold us back from our true selves. Made me think of (Best Picture Oscar-winner) Moonlight in that sense. Beautifully wrought, from the ravishing sets & costuming to the powerfully honest, authentic portrayals of life in 1920s America... Five great big Stars! See more
Apr 19, 2019 A wonderfully built story that seems to light to address the issues it takes on, but it does so masterfully. I would have liked another hour, but a great watch as it stands. See more
Apr 18, 2019 I had read the book because it dealt wish Louis Brooks. I enjoyed the book and was happy when a film version was produced. Haley Lu Richardson is so good as Brooks she should be in a movie just about Lulu. Elizabeth McGovern is very very good as is the German actor. Since it is a PBS production it will likely turn up on a future Masterpiece Theater. See more
