Critics Consensus

It's certainly uneven, and many viewers will find that its reach exceeds its grasp, but The Book of Eli finds the Hughes brothers injecting some fresh stylish fun into the kind of post-apocalyptic wasteland filmgoers have seen more than enough of lately.

This picture is one big waste of time, including that of the actors and those in the audience who pay to see it.

The Book Of Eli is just one hot mess with choppy biblical undertones... The filmmakers just tried to get too deep with something that was not fully developed.

Post-apocalypse films are a dime a dozen, so what makes The Book of Eli so different? Not much, except an evangelical subplot that is not strong enough to be this film's savior.

This is too predictable and unfun to be worth most of these actors time. Denzel Washington gives a performance worth noting, but it's not enough to save the movie from itself.

The most admirable aspect of the production is its use of Washington in a samurai-esque role.

Again rotten tomatoes has it wrong. The book of Eli is an amazing movie from being to the end. I think maybe the critics on rotten tomatoes needs a little fresh blood in the mix. This is a must watch movie full of twist and symbolism.

there is a lot of good in this but it didn't come together the way it should've of. unique tone with a unique musical score. some good action, but bad pacing and bad characters (2 viewings) SPOILERS this movie reminded me a cross between mad max and daredevil. the twist was surprising and unexpected, i just wish the movie was better up until that point. i noticed a lot of hints the second time around.

I love this genre and how they visualized it. One of the most underrated movies of all time... a post apocalyptic wasteland inspired by movies like mad max with an amazing Washington in his best role.

Unfairly bonked cause it happens to have a faith component to it. Super well written, filmed, performed, and the score rocks. Also the ending surprised more people than not.
