In a tiny California town, high school students Brian (Kevin Dillon), Meg (Shawnee Smith) and Paul (Donovan Leitch) discover a strange, gelatinous substance that melts the flesh of any living creatures in its path. The deadly substance gets into the town's sewer system, where it begins growing uncontrollably, occasionally emerging to feast on unsuspecting townspeople. A military clean-up crew is sent to eliminate the menace, but it may end up doing more harm than good.

Critics Consensus

The Blob can't replicate the B-movie charms of the original, though its fast pace and gory thrills pack enough of a punch to make it a worthwhile update.

Stunning practical effects work, a great story with great characters, and a huge sense of fun, it's a shame that The Blob doesn't have as big of a following as it should have.

All we get is sullen Kevin Dillon subbing for Steve and a bigger, nastier lump that bloodies up its victims in stomach-churning close-ups.

Though The Blob’s jaw-dropping practical effects are its main draw, the film’s script does a great job of developing a fun cast of small town characters while working in some humor and charm along the way.

It’s a corny monster premise, somehow made actually terrifying by showing, not telling what the monster can do.

Director Chuck Russell’s remake of the 1958 B-movie maintains the notion of an all-consuming ooze gorging itself on a small town but infuses it with body horror, fluorescent jelly, and a nothing-is-sacred disaster movie attitude.

Still the best to this very day. It would be dope if they did a remake of this.

One of the best horror movies I have ever seen, mostly because it actually SCARED me. Now, this movie goes so much better than the last movies that were remade from the original, and the effects as well as the plot was pretty decent. Now, the most horrific and most twisted thing about this movie is that it shows in pretty good detail on the blob "consuming" people. Now, looking back at it, it couldve used some better quality in story telling, but the way logic was used in this movie made up for it, and I really love how it made references to other sci-fi movies. In turn, I enjoyed it, and Im sure it will make good for another block buster film like this.

Good old fashion 80s horror movie. It felt like it took place in Twin Peaks. I also enjoyed the practical effects. Just wish they did a HUGE blob ball roaming through town, but whatever. All good. Fun concept, fun execution.

First rate story telling. And oh how I long for a return to this era and this campy good fun.
