A war film that wears superior influences on its sleeve. On the flipside, it brings us the best reindeer-chase scene ever committed to film.

Baalsrud never claimed to be a hero and the emphasis of this gripping reconstruction rightly falls on the resourcefulness, courage and self-sacrifice of those who epitomised the spirit of resistance.

Although initially the movie is a bit of a slog, the final leg is superbly staged and finger-chewingly tense, and it left me with almost as few nails as our frostbitten hero.

Best war thriller since "Hurt Locker." IFC Midnight is turning out some gems these days, and this film stands out from pack in terms of production value, talent and storyline. Great movie.

Truly brilliant. Cringe-inducing. A testament to man's spirit of hope and determination. You'll wince, cry and rage against the injustices of unrelenting hate. But then, in will come the guilt for our petty whining about everyday mundane worries. This man and the people around him are heroes. We don't see the likes of him and them often.
