When teenage Bennie arrives in Argentina to look for his long-estranged brother, Tetro, he finds not the idolized sibling from his youth, but a tormented and self-destructive soul who has abandoned his brilliant career as a writer. After Tetro rejects him, Bennie risks his brother's wrath by secretly completing one of his plays and submitting it for consideration for a prestigious literary prize.

Critics Consensus

A complex meditation on family dynamics, Tetro's arresting visuals and emotional core compensate for its uneven narrative.

Watching Tetro, Coppola's first original screenplay in some 30 years, is like eavesdropping on someone's dream.

Coppola’s style is all cinema, switching from black and white to shocking color at opportune moments, and moving the camera around with controlled madness.

The strength of TETRO- an imperfect film to be sure, but an admirable one - is that the movie is so recognizably from Francis Ford Coppola while nevertheless feeling new and even unrecognizable.

On the surface, he's a genius who never publishes what he personally finds beautiful because his art is too private and tragic, but a more cowardly second motivation also exists: if he never lets the world see creative works dearest to his heart, they can never be rejected. The love Francis Ford Coppola gives Tetro makes it clear this is the creative work dearest to his heart. It made made no money, but got 70% Rotten Tomatoes. Which measure of success do you think Coppola cares about most?

How incredibly frustrating it is to see a movie so compelling, wonderfully directed, technically exemplary and with a gorgeous cinematography go into self-destruction mode in the last thirty minutes, when it gives in to predictable revelations and silly situations worthy of a lame soap opera.
