Hodges takes a cool, detached approach, designing most scenes in monochrome with disturbing flesh-colours, and manages to make Segal's semi-android a strangely sympathetic monster. Go to Full Review

While this movie seems unsalvageable, it might have had some punch if we'd been told more about the Segal character's past, before his operation. Go to Full Review

The malady here is icy unconcern, and it has spread, unchecked, throughout the picture, so that most life signs have been stilled. Go to Full Review

Abraham M Jan 24, 2019 Michael Crichton books tend to be fairly technical, and getting that to play on screen while still making an engaging movie is a fine balance that more often than not - with a couple of notable exceptions - has been difficult for filmmakers. Robert Wise did it pretty effectively with The Andromeda Strain. This one, another early book and adaptation, comes off pretty much as sterile as an operating theater. The science is there, but it lacks a pulse. See more
Rey W Jun 29, 2018 The central idea here is that, as advances in computer sciences continue the possibility of a human cyborg, a six million dollar man if you will, becomes real and that that might not be a good thing. In this particular consideration, a computer chip acting as a mood enhancer fouls up. The director spends way too long in rooms with doctors mulling over hypothesis after hypothesis, too much time at surgery. Get to the point already! I fell asleep waiting for that to happen. It's a slow mover. See more

Poe M Jan 29, 2011 Okay bit of science fiction from writer Michael Crichton and director/screenwriter Mike Hodges. The story follows George Segal as a man who suffers epileptic blackouts and remember nothing afterwards To cure his condition, he tries an experimental surgery than implants microcomputers in her brain, but that leads to paranoia regarding mind control and a descent into madness. The film and story certainly had potential, but Hodges stark and austere approach to the characters, story, and visuals, has the effect of distancing the audience from the characters. Compared to something like "Repulsion" or "Rosemary's Baby," where the audience descends into uncomfortable madness right along with the character, this film film instead has a clinical distance from it's characters and the film suffers for it. Still, it's an interesting idea and Hodges direction is visually striking (it reminded me a lot of George Lucas' "THX 1138"), which makes this film worth checking out for fans of 1970s sci-fi. Hackett, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, Jill Clayburgh, Matt Clark, and Victor Argo (briefly as an overly) also appear in the film. And an interesting side note, even if I don't really agree with it, this film was a favorite of Stanley Kubrick. See more
