In Paris, isolated Eastern European émigré Trelkovsky rents an apartment in a spooky old building whose inhabitants regard him with suspicion and even outright hostility. When he learns that the apartment's previous tenant, a beautiful woman, tried to commit suicide by jumping out the window, Trelkovsky begins to identify with her in increasingly disturbing ways. Then, to make matters even worse, he reaches the conclusion that his new neighbors are plotting to kill him.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A rough-edged thriller that lacks the precision of Polanski's best work, but makes up for it with its skillful mounting of paranoia, dread, and dark themes.

Polanski hopes to get under the skin during the offering, but such irritation only connects periodically in the overlong feature, though creepiness and interesting interpretational elements do contribute to the puzzle aspect of the material. Go to Full Review

Harry S May 27, 2018 Amazing psychological horror/thriller from (and starring) Polanski. Super good stuff. Watch this.
Harry G Mar 5, 2018 Though the wait of suspense feels long, the buildup and eventual dive into madness is enticing to watch. This is due to the acid laced direction and great performances which alters the perspective that the audience is experiencing. Polanski combines that with the right pace of suspenseful thriller. From that we feel welcome before we realize we want to check out of this madness. See more
Draco G Nov 18, 2017 I love Roman Polanski's movies. But this one, not so much!
Hagrid W Jun 12, 2017 Although it may be by far the weakest in Polanski's Apartment Trilogy the tenant still remains a beautiful vision and an intriguing movie throughout despite Polanski's performance being the main sore in this movie the rest of the cast lets him feed of their fine performances and we get the perfect creepy atmosphere that Polanski seems to deliver every time even if its not as engaging as its predecessors See more

Anakin S May 26, 2017 Roman polanski is a master when it comes to turn tiny things and details into something enormous. Here, Trelkovsky - a bureaucrat without the biggest friend base, rents a crib in Paris. Recently a woman jumped out of the window from the mentioned crib. He visits her at the hospital and when she dies he can take over the apartment. He get's in touch wih a friend of the deceased and apart from a few colleagues he only meets the people in his flat. Mean people are claiming him of things he haven't done. Slowly, but steady he seems to be walking the same steps as the suicide girl, while there is little help to get from the grumpy people around him. This is full scale terror, told in tight mysterious environments. Psycological and real without overdoing anything. A solid score and great performances helps the amazing storytelling, with a nice constant pace that keeps you interested. I liked this film a whole lot, even if it reminds me a lot of "Repulsion" and even "Rosemary's Baby". It's also cool to see the wonderful Isabelle Adjani, even if she never get to shine as a nutcase that we all know she can do so well. Here she portray a total opposite, nearly. A brilliant film by a brilliant director that rearly miss my likings. 7.5 out of 10 packets of Marlboro. See more
