From writer-producer-director Todd Field comes TÁR, starring Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, the groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra. We meet Tár at the height of her career, as she's preparing both a book launch and much-anticipated live performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Over the ensuing weeks her life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way. The result is a searing examination of power, and its impact and durability in today's society.

Critics Consensus

Led by the soaring melody of Cate Blanchett's note-perfect performance, Tár riffs brilliantly on the discordant side of fame-fueled power.

Tár can be tough to follow, although Cate Blanchett in the title role makes it mostly worth the effort.

A cut above in terms of style, performance, and ideas, Todd Field’s film about a celebrity conductor accused of sexual misconduct is essential cinema.

Much like Lydia herself, Tar is a skilful, polished and fascinating piece of work, but it’s missing a beating heart.

The film is a genuine tragedy -- a black comic tragedy, but a tragedy nonetheless. When great artists betray their talent by treating it carelessly and abusing the power that comes with it, it’s always a tragedy.

Tár is ruthless and an exploiter. She’s also a great artist: no one will stop her working. That acknowledgement of the artist’s hunger and drive might be the most subversive, troubling and rousing aspect of this absorbing film.

Tár is dense, but that density is viscous and if an audience can sit in that density, the layers of the piece will let them in.

It's an interesting film that could easily be based on real events, but it's a captivating fiction due to the themes and concerns it raises. Its technical merits stand out, as does Cate Blanchett's performance. [Full Review in Spanish]
