It is like a picture poem, with its sunshine and happiness in the beginning and its stormy drama in the end. Go to Full Review

The exquisite tragic ending -- conceived musically and rhythmically as a gradually decelerating diminuendo -- is one of the pinnacles of silent cinema. Go to Full Review

A relatively minor Murnau film, lacking the director's usual visual flair, but Murnau's mastery of film as a visual language remains on display, along with Flaherty's clear love of its island location. Go to Full Review

Jan 26, 2019 The best romance movie ever made!
Abraham W Jan 3, 2019 Murnau's last flick. Great story that has a bit of a Polynesian Romeo and Juliet vibe going on along with a the social themes that pervade Murnau's work. Visually stunning, to be sure. See more
Poe S Jul 10, 2018 Tabu is definitely simplistic in its storyline and the first half is not as memorable as the second one, but it's so authentic in its casting, interesting in its setting and phenomenally directed by F.W. Murnau in what was unfortunately his final directorial effort. The standout aspect is the amazing, deservedly Oscar-winning cinematography. See more
Leia G Jun 3, 2017 They just don't make movies like this anymore. I wonder why. Oh, wait, yeah, the want to create a perfect society where all will be "equal" and where to be fat is your "choice". Meaning that when I was watching this movie I exulted at seeing these beautiful and healthy people of the Bora Bora island, smiling and dancing and living their life to the fullest with harmony with nature. The story itself is very simple and equally very powerful, the story of doomed love. Cinematography is breathtaking, locations are beautiful, your eyes are happy not to witness the so-called "green screen" and CGI effects, just nature and talent of the creators of this movie, the director Murnau and cinematographer Floyd Crosby. Abraham S Aug 21, 2014 An young innocent South Sea island couple runs afoul of some ancient native tradition ("we need a virgin to throw into the volcano") that dooms their happy love. Filmed in Bora Bora, rarely has the French philosophical ideal of the glory of the primitive savage been portrayed as well. See more
