Life is looking pretty bleak for theater director Caden Cotard. His wife and daughter have left him, his therapist is more interested in plugging her new book than helping him with his problems, and a strange disease is causing his body to shut down. Caden leaves his home in Schenectady, N.Y., and heads to New York City, where he gathers a cast of actors and tells them to live their lives within the constructs of a mock-up of the city.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Charlie Kaufman's ambitious directorial debut occasionally strains to connect, but ultimately provides fascinating insight into a writer's mind.

Kaufman, who once dazzled us with his japester's invention, uses those same tools to do something else here. He leaves us reeling. Go to Full Review

This is a classic Kaufmanesque work: bold, bizarre and utterly baffling. Go to Full Review

Synecdoche, New York finally feels bitter, hollow and adolescent: like a gargantuan music video conceived for an emo band with a penchant for Pirandello. Go to Full Review

Synecdoche, New York aches with sentiments on a life (and indeed all life) not fully lived and overly focused on analysis and reflection, offering rich commentary on remorse and alienation. Go to Full Review

George M Mar 3, 2019 I personally found it pretentious. Of course there are billions of people in the world each with their own lives and struggles and mistakes to bear til they die. These are trite observations the movie is pointing out to us but the movie treats them as though they're much more than that. Much of the movie is unironic r/im14andthisisdeep material in my honest evaluation. What did the fire house mean? It could mean all sorts of things and I've seen people interpret it in many different ways which indicates to me there either isn't really an intended answer or that the intended answer wasn't adequately communicated. Unless that was the intended effect? That it could mean many things the viewer connects it to? Many things in the movie appear to follow this pattern. I read from another user this film was booed at Cannes and I can see why. I was relieved to see critics did not universally love this film and many panned it. Ebert's review was beautiful and got me to watch this originally but I think his review is more thoughtful and meaningful than the whole of this film and it took me a fraction of the time to read. Finn R Feb 19, 2019 Easily one of the best films ever, definitely a thinking movie and a film to watch multiple times over the course of your life.
Finn S Nov 26, 2018 auffman who directed this movie is revered as a quirky, offbeat and hugely talented writer. After a blazing entry with Being John Malkovich his later efforts were, perhaps too abstract- even by his standards and Synecdoche, New York is no different. This time he is also the director and the result is a quirky, offbeat film which can be enthralling, or presumptuous- depending on your taste and state of mind. I thought the film had its moments(including a churning scene where Seymour Hoffman accidently cuts himself whilst shaving) but it tries way too hard to be quirky. See more
Anakin S Nov 18, 2018 I would be lying if I said I understood the movie. There are so many layers to it that it's almost impossible to grasp the essence in its entirety. But, I think I felt this movie. I felt the void. I felt what it is like to be in Kauffman's mind especially coming from The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind and it actually resonated with me. This guy is a genius. Period. See more
Finn W Jul 6, 2018 This is one helluva movie. Being perfectly honest, I didn't understand the meaning of it the first time I watched. After the second viewing I understood it was about his life and how he represented all of us, and that his play was the embodiment of that. But I had no clue re the details of the picture until I saw YMS' explanation of the movie. Then I realized how the movie used the concept of time and how it was slipping through his fingers. I realized the how the soundtrack explained so much, from the lyrics to the song titles that were used in particular scenes. I learned how him and Adele were polar opposites of each other in every way imaginable, and the film was showing you the faults of both extremes. Its a story about a man's longing to be loved and his desire to create something so meaningful and true that would define his existence. Please watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjqYpsuBrPU Its a 5 part series that delves extremely deep into the movie, offering not just his interpretation of the movie but extremely useful facts he dug up re the movie and also found during repeated watches. You cannot comprehend the level of detail that went into every character name, usage of props, random stuff being said in the background on the radio, etc. This is a movie about death and dying and its extremely sad. If you've seen the movie please invest some time and watch the above link. You're welcome. See more
