Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), a beer-slinging loser, has one bright spot in his life: his precocious daughter, Molly (Madeline Carroll), who takes care of them both. However, on Election Day, Molly sets off an unforeseen chain of events that results in the race for the presidency coming down to just one vote: her father's.

Critics Consensus

Despite Kevin Costner providing his most charismatic performance in years, Swing Vote fails to find the right mix of political satire and heartfelt drama.

It's a sentiment Capra might well have echoed, though he would surely have punched up the gags while he was at it.

The film varies between ironic cynicism about the political process and overt whimsy and sentimentality.

The blend between surreal satire and sentiment isn't always comfortable but the set-up is intriguing and Costner nails the part.

Swing Vote, like Costner's protagonist, is too benign to go for the jugular and settles instead for tickling us gently in the ribs.

Costner himself believes that Swing Vote echoes the emotion and sentiments of Bull Durham and Field of Dreams. I have to agree. So, come August 1, cast your vote for Swing Vote. It's a winner!

Swing Vote follows Kevin Costner who holds the deciding vote for his district to determine the next President of the United States. The Republican candidate was played by Kelsey Grammer and the Democratic candidate was played by the late Dennis Hopper. The script was predictable but enjoyable to watch, it had a good premise with plenty of good intentions to do the right thing. It had an all star cast with George Lopez, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci, and many more. Overall it was a good movie, but not something I would watch again.

Poor script and totally unrealistic storyline. Is it a comedy? Drama? Political Satire? No, none of these. It falls flat on all counts although Madeline Carroll deserves credit
