Hondo Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits Jim Street (Colin Farrell) to join an elite unit of the Los Angeles Police Department. Together they seek out more members, including tough Deke Kay (LL Cool J) and single mom Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). The team's first big assignment is to escort crime boss Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez) to prison. It seems routine, but when Montel offers a huge reward to anyone who can break him free, criminals of various stripes step up for the prize.

Critics Consensus

A competent, but routine police thriller.

As summer shoot-'em-ups go, this is pretty well executed, with plenty of macho posing and gunfire.

Strengths: Itâ(TM)s hard to watch this movie and not have a good time. Itâ(TM)s just a fun action movie and sometimes, thatâ(TM)s all youâ(TM)re looking for. Samuel L. Jackson (Daniel âHondoâ? Harrelson) and Michelle Rodriguez (Christina Sanchez) shine playing the kind of characters theyâ(TM)re known for. It was perfect casting. Meanwhile, Colin Farrell (James Street) and LL Cool J (Deacon Kay) were solid enough. Thereâ(TM)s plenty of action to sink your teeth into. Whether it be training moments as the team gets ready or the big stuff involving the prisoner transport, itâ(TM)s all enjoyable. Thereâ(TM)s a tense opening scene that is really good, as well as plenty of setup that makes us care about these characters. For the most part, I found the soundtrack to be very good. Weaknesses: This is a cheesy movie without much in the way of story. It follows a simple plot line, hits the expected story beats, and plays out just about the way youâ(TM)d think. Jeremy Renner (Brian Gamble) is usually great, but felt like he was trying too hard in this. His expressions and such just donâ(TM)t work. Heâ(TM)s cheesy. Speaking of cheese, the dialogue in this movie was full of it. So many lines that feel awkward or make you cringe. Overall: What makes this movie work is that it fully understands what it is. Itâ(TM)s a fun but cheesy action flick. If you go in just looking to have a good time, this should work.

Can't believe people rated this as anything other than a below action action movie. Bad acting with a predictable plot does not result in a good story.

An innovative, balls-to-the-wall premise squandered by a mismanaged budget and sheepish direction.

This was the dumbest movie about nothing. It cost $70 million in 2003 to make this awful movie. 4 actors, it was basically a movie to pay 4 actors and a director to waste people's money for a useless movie to pay themselves off for profit on a movie that was nothing but a complete waste of time to watch.
