The effects are spectacular, the story's true to tradition and the guy in tights presents a perfect blend of superhuman strength and lovelorn vulnerability.

...[Superman Returns] isn't just an eye-popping, terrifically entertaining action fantasy with enough nostalgic poignancy to make a man-child cry. It's a cunningly inspired allegory in which Superman is akin to no less a saviour than Jesus Christ.

Graced with arresting visuals, intelligent writing and decent performances, "Superman Returns" is a soulful, wistful, not-quite-romance with all the action a summer movie crowd could want.

What this film has — and what is missing from most superhero films these days — is a real sense of the heroic.

...Singer had all the tools to strike a balance between action-movie spectacle and moving human drama. But he can't quite pull it off because the script feels incomplete from the very first sequence, and grows more confusing with each new scene.

Superman Returns casts the Man of Steel in a movie that steals from the 1978 original starring Christopher Reeve, with few ideas that work and several that don't.

Despite its length..."Superman Returns" makes us interested in seeing the Man of Steel once again. It has clever bits that play with mythology and a whole new set of problems that could be addressed in two or three sequels.

Superman Returns is just about everything a comics nerd could ask for: As slick as the resurrection of the Batman franchise but with the charm of the Spiderman films, and of course a bit of X-Men wit, this film embodies the term "universal appeal."

"Why The World Doesn't Need Superman" is the title of Lois Lane's Pulitzer Prize-winning essay in this...blockbuster. At times, during Bryan Singer's overlong reworking, one can only agree with her. It's all highly competent but pretty predictable stuff.

Singer has a great skill for balancing emotional parts of a story with big action sequences. "Superman Returns" is just as entertaining when Superman is saving an airplane or cozying up to Lois on top of the Daily Planet building.
