What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may evoke memories of classic summer blockbusters a little too eagerly for some, but Super 8 has thrills, visual dazzle, and emotional depth to spare.

It's a by-the-numbers blockbuster, but one with a key element that's missing from most of the big-budget bloatfests crowding each other for space on the marquee every summer: heart. Go to Full Review

While it may not achieve the level of pop culture canonization as the Spielberg films it invokes, Super 8 should inspire many to use their camera-phones for something more creative than a profile pic. Go to Full Review

It is a "perfect movie" because it can be rewatched without ever losing its feeling of freshness and wonder, and because there are no flaws that retroactively diminish the experience. Go to Full Review

What can be said is how sharply calculated "Super 8" is as an amalgamation of what both Spielberg and Abrams separately do best. Go to Full Review

Draco W Apr 15, 2019 Well made sci-fi, basically a family film or kids film, might be scary for some. Brilliant actors, excellent story, plus side story and make sure to watch through the end credits. Don't get the poor ratings from adult men, don't think they get its a kids film. Some great one liners and black comedy. Excellent special effects. Worth a watch. See more
Albus L Apr 11, 2019 'Super 8' is a tribute/ cinematic nostalgia mashup that does a fine job at building tension and creating intrigue. Unfortunately the poorly-conceived resolutions and pay-offs make the second half disappointing. See more
Luke G Apr 6, 2019 J.J. Abrams has done it again!
Luke W Feb 28, 2019 This is a lifeless film that tries, and fails, to capture Spielberg's best.
George S Jan 22, 2019 Typically I am on the fence about JJ Abrams films. He's a hit or miss director/producer/writer. Lost/Star Trek/Star Wars are all still debated while films like Regarding Henry, and Mission Impossible III are examples of his best form. There are so many films of his that have so much potential and end up wasted because of his mystery box theories (Lost and Force Awakens are two such examples). He has such a Steven Spielberg vibe about him but usually it is squandered by mainstream goals. Sometimes his copy cat nature of his beloved director shoots him in the foot. Not so with Super 8. His emulation of Spielberg and his filming style only enhances the quality of Super 8. It is a celebration of a genre and film style that is long gone to the new generation which mostly gets it's thrills with explosions and explanatory dialogue to make clear the obvious. Super 8 proposes a very simple concept: E.T. meets the Goonies. It explores the concept with great actors with poised style and direction. For me there is little not to love about this film. It is a triumph for JJ. There are many films people would suggest to watch by JJ. like Armageddon for action, or Star Trek for a fresh take on an old franchise or Mission Impossible III for revitalizing a franchise. Yet for me Super 8 is the only clear pick. It is the best of JJ not only because you can tell it is personal to him, but because he does not hide his natural reverence and desire to live up to Steven Spielberg. It truly is a great film and if JJ tapped into this nature more often he would be making more consistent quality films instead of duds like Star Trek: Into Darkness, Cloverfield, and The Force is still waiting to Awake. Luke W Jan 20, 2019 I kind of liked the making-a-movie-within-the-movie aspect of Super 8 a lot more than the chief plot with the monster and the train and the badman government and the blah blah blah. Which isn't ideal, but saying that obviously means I liked something about it. See more
