Ponsoldt’s Summering feels a bit disjointed as the themes and narratives are all over the place, but there are so many moments between them that makes the movie worthwhile.

Summering loses its soul and never bothers to recover it.

The ending is a tiresome new-agey cop-out and a lot of viable ideas have gone to waste. A disappointment.

Summering is a monotonous pseudo-mystery about four 11-year-old girls who find a dead man's body and talk and act in ways that are very unrealistic for pre-teen girls. This pointless waste of time gets more irritating as it goes along. Avoid at all costs.

Which makes it disappointing that those sincere motives aren’t turned into a more compelling film, which meanders with stiff dialogue and broad characterizations.

Embracing the highs and lows of childhood on screen unlike any other project in recent memory, Summering is a special little gem that deserves attention.

With its rare focus on girls’ friendship and growing up, 'Summering' has good intentions but that never actually makes it a good movie. Girls are owed their own 'Stand by Me,' but they deserve so much better than this.

I still continue to root for James Ponsoldt to make intriguing or profound films once again; maybe he needs a more focused screenwriter next time.

While overflowing with nostalgic charm, this slight coming-of-age drama about sisterhood and adolescent memories winds up mostly forgettable.

A 'Stand By Me' for girls, a kid detective story, a low key hang out movie spotlighting female friendship, and a slight but sweet requiem for childhood.

Part of the problem I have is with the dialog of the kids. For 12 year olds, they all punch way above their weight with intellectual discussions of life and death.

This indie tween friendship drama shows early potential, but the uneven tone and unrealistic plot twists dampen its impact.

Summering ponders just how one goes about being a kid while being helicopter parented.

A movie that ultimately goes nowhere, with a narrative that too obviously echoes Stand by Me and underdeveloped characters whose stories and interactions never gel.

That ethereal sort of thing could get gloopy and sentimental, but “Summering” balances the bucolic stuff with bits of acidic humor.

It’s as if "Summering" finishes its point by saying (and literally showing) that everything’s OK if the girls have each other, do cartwheels, and dance.

A coming-of-age story that comes off stilted and artificial.... There are affecting moments in the film, but too many that seem recycled or opaque.

Funny, sweet, poignant, and heartbreaking, it respects its heroines, imbuing their quest in the tellingly named town of Midwood with the mystique of the heroine’s journey out of childhood.

Matthew Lickona National Review Aug 13, 2022 1/5
Things happen, and there’s a story, but Ponsoldt seems almost wholly uninterested in the events on-screen. What he seems to be after is what those events signify.
