What to Know

Critics Consensus

Summer of '84 suffers from an overreliance on nostalgia for its titular decade, but a number of effective jolts may still satisfy genre enthusiasts.

Summer Of '84 never really gives us a reason why these kids should be friends, and although we spent most of the film watching them hang out, the direction is too stiff to call it a proper hangout movie. Go to Full Review

Clunkiness aside, Summer of 84 is a satisfyingly suspenseful adventure, with compelling characters, and a chilling murder mystery at its center. Go to Full Review

A modest little suspense puzzle that simulates rather than builds on vastly better 'my neighbor may be a murderer' stories from Rear Window to Stranger Things. Go to Full Review

Rudderless "dark" teen mystery ‘Summer of 84’ lacks originality, scares, mystery, and good acting, hoping its hackneyed throwback nature will override its basic lack of storytelling skill. Go to Full Review

Summer of 84 was a fun movie that any casual fan of horror would enjoy. If you get done with Stranger Things and feel like you need more 80’s nostalgia, this is a great movie to scratch that itch. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, spending any amount of time with Davey and his friends proves grating, and there's not enough time spent feeling terrified. Go to Full Review

Apr 27, 2019 This movie has some pretty awesome nostalgia and it's not too predictable. I think if you like Stranger Things, this is worth a watch. See more
Han W Mar 16, 2019 I really enjoyed this 80's thriller. The teen characters were really engaging and it had just the right amount of suspense.
Poe W Mar 11, 2019 Well it's got guts I'll give it that. When a nostalgiafest features kids in danger you rarely believe there'll be consequences or anything too icky. So you have to respect a film willing to go there. But I guess the issue I have is that I don't think nostalgic innocence mixes well with the type of horror they go for here. Because the genre changes about 2/3 of the way through to a gritty, murderous horror film. The whole point of these kinds of nostalgia films is to hang on the importance of childhood relationships. I can't think of any comparable films where the friendships don't last. It'd be different if the film was engaging with and deconstructing tropes, but I don't think it even noticed. As a result, it started to feel odder and odder. Like a different movie almost. On less grand issues, the serial killer was not a very impressive actor. When his mask is uncovered it should be terrifying. But it's just bland. And the girl next door he has a (semirequited) crush on is just too much. She never felt real for an instant. More like a 15-year-old boy's wet dream. See more
Luke S Mar 3, 2019 There's so many things bad about this movie it brings down the few good things about it.
Anakin L Feb 7, 2019 Plot holes galor, at a certain point the believability factor goes right out the window and let me tell yah folks, thatï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s early on. Which makes the ï¿ 1/2 1/2suspenseful dialogue,ï¿ 1/2 1/2ï¿ 1/2Â? thoughtless, silly and futile. The jump scares arenï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)t that great, I wasnï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)t a fan of the soundtrack, Nothing excited me, scared me, however I did laugh at the irony of everything. Iï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)m sad to see the movie has a 69% at the time I write this, that number doesnï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)t deserve this. I could write a plot summary in the amount of words I used hear easily. Anakin W Feb 1, 2019 Stranger Things meets The Burbs meets Disturbia. It's good 80s nostalgic fun. I preferred the first ending to the second (and when you see it you'll know what I mean). See more
