Like many underrecognized treasures, David Miller's Sudden Fear fits into and defies different genres, its convention-scrambling partly the result of the fact that the film looks both forward and back. Go to Full Review

Outside of two very short but fairly unpleasing sequences, there is not a shot in this film that isn’t necessary to its dramatic progression. Not a shot, either, that isn’t fascinating and doesn’t make us think it is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Go to Full Review

This forgotten woman-in-distress film noir stars Joan Crawford as a rich playwright and Jack Palance as the younger actor looking to marry and off her. Nice-looking but poorly plotted. Go to Full Review

the draw here is Crawford, and she delivers magnificently. If you can toss away any hints of "Mommie Dearest" (and I realize that is difficult), you might truly appreciate an actress who knows when to hold back and when to let loose. Go to Full Review

Abraham W Feb 3, 2019 This little Noir gem should not be missed if you're into the genre. Beautifully shot and directed and perfect casting. Only Robert Ryan might have been suited for the role played by Jack Palance. Joan Crawford was rightly nominated for best female actor. And, Gloria Grahame's sole imperfection is that she didn't get more screen time. See more
Luke G Feb 2, 2019 Actor Lester Blaine has all but landed the lead in Myra Hudson's new play when Myra vetoes him because, to her, he doesn't look like a "romantic leading man." On a train from New York to San Francisco, Blaine sets out to prove Myra wrong...by romancing her. Is he sincere, or does he have a dark ulterior motive? The answer brings on a game of cat and mouse; but who's the cat and who's the mouse? Academy Awards Nominee Actress in a Leading Role Joan Crawford . Academy Awards Nominee Best Actor in a Supporting Role Jack Palance knock Sudden Fear out of the ball park . Joan Crawford won her third and last Oscar nomination for this well executed noir thriller, Joan Crawford has us all spellbound with her magnificent performance. She throws vanity to the winds, and is not afraid to show her character as someone in the round, complete with cowardice, foolishness, and even extreme stupidity, combined with cunning, intelligence, charm and inspiration. Rarely has a woman been shown so soaked in sweat with sheer terror, and she must have stepped straight out of the shower for each of those shots ! Jack Palance gives a strong and convincing performance as a conman who marries Ms. Crawford. He is suave, urbane and sinister. Yet this movie is a Joan Crawford showcase. One of the best film noirs of all time, extremely stylish and intelligent in it's story and craft. See more
Hermione M May 3, 2018 Surprisingly good noir about a playwright who marries an actor who's taking her for a ride. The cinematography is fascinating, the acting is on target by all actors. Plot twists at the end abound... See more
