Larry Cohen’s film is a barbed satire of 1980s consumer culture. Go to Full Review

Peopled by leaden or hackneyed characters...The Stuff is further burdened by special effects of the most pedestrian kind. Go to Full Review

Gory sequences do finally arise at the climax – a nonsensical showdown of sorts – but it doesn’t offset the unnecessary humor and the pervasive lack of sincerity. Go to Full Review

The Stuff may struggle just a little to get its narrative moving along over the course of its brief 80-ish minutes, but there's still a fair amount to like about it, including its amusing & clever special effects and its on the nose satire. Go to Full Review

…The Stuff didn’t find favour at the time, satire rarely does, but it’s a funny, sharp and satirical movie that his its targets squarely, and there’s some ingenious model work for the action scenes… Go to Full Review

George S Mar 23, 2019 For Lacanians---and yes, I can already hear the groans---there is a distinction to draw between objects of desire (objet a, McGuffins) and objects of drive, which Zizek defines as an embodiment of enjoyment. No doubt, the titular "Stuff" fits the latter description, an "extraordinary protuberances" bubbling up from the earth itself---whether or not it is extraterrestrial or some chthonic entity is never made clear---"whose growth cannot be stopped," indestructible and threatening like the (similarly face-hugging) libidinal Xenomorph. In this way, The Stuff is a irresistible metaphor for Reaganite consumerism, the acephalic impulse of late capitalism to consume and be consumed, death being the only option (as death is the only drive). Poe S Oct 25, 2018 Amazing film on a low budget.
Draco P Oct 4, 2018 Larry Cohen's film "The Stuff" is an odd film, odd in the sense of how its done. It's acting is pretty solid, the pacing is fast, the special effect aren't too shabby, its well written with a solid underlying message about consumerism and the companies behind them but its bizarrely edited. The third of the film feels like two film put together, its kind of off putting. It also sort of feels like each scene ends earlier and cuts immediately to the next. Normally this would kill a film but with all the other positives it actually kind of works, the short running time really helps. "The Stuff" has a lot going on and never slows down, which depending on your tastes, you may love it or hate it. See more
Ron R Sep 2, 2018 3.5/5. The Stuff is a bizarre little movie with tons of cool, low-budget effects, a fun plot, and great, if weird, performance from Michael Moriarty. It has some flaws, but you can do a lot worse when it comes to B-movies. See more
Hermione S Jul 13, 2018 it was a cool idea though but ruined by too much 80s cheese
Finn P May 27, 2018 From the director of "It's Alive", comes the most delightful, fearsome and edible thing in the universe. "THE STUFF" (Enough is Never Enough) See more
