What to Know

Critics Consensus

Striptease can't decide whether it is a lurid thriller or a sexy satire - which becomes a moot point as it proves disastrously incapable of pulling either off.

I don't know if the lawyers are currently scanning the contracts for Striptease in order to find out what went wrong in the small print, but someone got badly conned; and that someone is mostly the audience. Go to Full Review

The Striptease script... is at a loss for any kind of drama between Moore's dances. Not for a second do we care about her as a mother, wife or working woman. Go to Full Review

Albus W Apr 15, 2019 This film has a noble mission in that it takes seriously a character who works in a profession that does not typically get treated with respect, and it has a goofy sense of humour which is at times endearing, but despite these virtues and the expert polish of a well-financed studio film it is a somewhat lackluster movie overall. Which is a pity because if it had worked it could have been one of those films with B movie content which attains a high level of art. See more
Feb 5, 2019 For a 90s movie this is one of my favorites. It has always been a dirty pleasure to watch (not in any sexual way). I love how it depicts the stigma around stripping but also highlights the life of a stripper (personal life, stage life, and so forth). This is my go to movies when i want to be inspired by womans empowerment. This movie does have some strong language, dirty scences (mainly showing womens exposed breasts and bottoms). I only rate 4 stars because it is a little too hollywoodized but thats expected with big name actors and actresses. See more
Leia R Jul 22, 2018 Whatever clever satirical bent this may be aiming for-something supposedly feminist about an atypical anti-heroine standing up to the man writ large, from corrupt politicians to corpulent stalkers to crappy employers-the movie misses the mark by a long shot. The ideas are unfocused and thinly sketched, lacking the precision needed for well-balanced satire, and the screenplay is dead in the water, just a jumble of scenes and words that barely scrape together a coherent narrative. By and large the supporting cast, when they clue in to what film they should be making, hit the right tone-especially Reynolds, who is the very definition of a buffoon, a practically classical portrayal of political power gone stupid-but the biggest problem lies right at the heart of the film with Moore. Everything rests on her character and her performance, and with the exception of the dance sequences-the best bits of the film by far, thanks in no small part to Moore's considerable dancing skills-Moore is just too dour for this semi-comic material. Yet what is worse, and where the film fails most spectacularly, is in the very character that Moore plays: While the filmmakers obviously imagine her as some sort of feminist firebrand, defending her daughter and rebuilding her life, the fact is that she is only seen through the male gaze, reduced to being the contradiction of both madonna and whore. Abraham P Feb 14, 2018 Story about a stripper mom who gets kidnapped by a Congressman. Not really any good. It should have been a campy comedy. The producers are morons. See more
