This intelligent biopic is kept aloft by Josef Hader's sensitive performance as the kind, gentlemanly Zweig. Go to Full Review

What's audacious and subtly seductive about Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe is Schrader's attempt to trace its hero's pacific charm through highly charged public and private moments. Go to Full Review

I was mesmerized by this film--it's an exceptional piece of work, not to be missed. Go to Full Review

Its more or less interesting when it intimately portrays the last days of the Austrian writer, but I fear that, at its dramatic core, there is an absence of verve that is prolonged by superfluous dialogues. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The film could be thought of as an elegy in the form of letters sent from the cities that housed [Stefan Zweig] in America, from Buenos Aires to New York, until his final retreat in Brazil. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Kylo R May 29, 2017 A potentially fascinating subject turned into a dull, uninsightful, dreary movie. Zweig resents the efforts he has to make to secure visas for fellow intellectuals trapped in Nazi Germany. He takes no public stand, although he is quoted as saying "Every gesture of resistance which is void of either risk or impact is nothing but a cry for recognition." Seems to me that every gesture of resistance carries with it either risk or impact to some degree. Steig -- in this movie at least -- makes no such gesture beyond trying to find some comfortable way for himself as an exile. I am interested to read other audience reactions, and willing to admit if I've missed something. See more
