What to Know

Critics Consensus

Starry Eyes pokes Hollywood's seedy underbelly to produce a refreshingly original horror story led by a breakout performance from Alex Essoe.

Horror fans should keep their eyes on the filmmakers - and Essoe, who gives a star-making performance. Go to Full Review

"Starry Eyes" may leave you feeling hopeless, but its bleak vision of masochistic perfectionism is clear-eyed, cogent, and devastatingly unsettling. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Nov 13, 2014
The degeneration into familiar genre tropes reduces the impact of the wittily satirical set-up, with the result that Starry Eyes fails to live up to its initial promise. But the film indicates genuine talent on the part of its directors/screenwriters. Go to Full Review

[Starry Eyes'] unique and visionary take will all but guarantee a long shelf life among horror buffs and is sure to earn a deserved overnight cult following. Go to Full Review

A slow-burn, surreal nightmare that honors paranoia-filled dramas of the '60s and '70s that has a shocking payoff to make it feel entirely original, all grounded by Essoe's tortured performance. Go to Full Review
Kathi Maio The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction Mar 11, 2020
Equal parts occult horror and slasher flick, Starry Eyes is definitely a B movie, but fairly well done, as such. Go to Full Review

Hagrid M Dec 9, 2018 I'm not a big horror guy. I don't horror often. But if I have to horror, I like a horror that doesn't horror the whole time. If it's blood and carnage and entrails from the start, I'll check out and not care. I need to care about a character and the choices they make, so I like it when a horror film tells a story that I can get on board with, even if it features decisions made that I don't agree with. This film all hinges around a single decision, and it's a decision that has nasty consequences. It made me squirm, it made me avert my eyes, it made me squint so I didn't have to see as much of the screen, but most importantly it made me care about what was happening. Good performances, simple story told in a way that I imagine was relatively inexpensive to film but didn't seem cheap, and it utilized some really nasty bits of body horror with the sound effects to match. Maybe went a little too far with the gore towards the end, but like I said, I'm not a horror guy, and my tolerance for this kind of stuff is far from robust. Also, I will always look favorably on a film with a chewy synth score. See more
Ron G Feb 14, 2018 Much better than I expected from a $2 yellow-cardboard previously viewed DVD from Family Dollar. Entertaining and grim, with a gruesome climax and some biting satire about what young actresses-on-their-way-up want, what we want from them, what prices they sometimes have to pay, and how twisted Hollyweird can get. That's showbiz! See more
Kylo S Feb 3, 2018 Original horror..loved it
Kylo L Nov 10, 2017 A supernatural horror that starts off too slowly detailing the boring life of an aspiring actress and her aspiring friends as they work at fast food restaurants and hit endless auditions. The back half of the movie more than makes up for the front: a startling transformation of the main character pulled off in a masterful performance by Alexandra Essoe. Bloody, gory, deaths soon follow. The rest of the acting isn't great, but the effects help ease that. Terrific. See more
Finn W Oct 31, 2017 Haunting and moody, Starry Eyes is a perverse cautionary tale of horror and greed. How far are you willing to go for fame? Are your dreams worth sacrificing your humanity? Starry Eyes has the answers. See more
Han W Oct 27, 2017 A solid Faustian horror, let down a tad by the 'can't think of an ending' ending...
