What to Know

Critics Consensus

Smart, hard-hitting, and queasily realistic, Starred Up is an instant classic of U.K. prison cinema.

Mackenzie is seeking to understand how all this explosive male energy can co-exist under such brutal conditions, and the answer is with great difficulty. Go to Full Review

What makes Starred Up such a riveting experience is that, despite the often unintelligible brogues in which its characters speak, the film so vividly depicts the cutthroat culture of prison life that nothing gets lost in translation. Go to Full Review

Director David Mackenzie has empathy for the characters, but also knows how to ratchet up the tension and make the scene of mayhem pack a wallop. Go to Full Review

Filmed on a shoestring budget in one of Belfast’s disused penitentiaries, this is a raw, claustrophobic and, importantly, glamour-free depiction of institutionalization. Go to Full Review

I took a deep breath after this film was over. Jack O’Connell will literally become a star this week once Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken hits theaters, but his snarling performance in Starred Up can’t be missed. Go to Full Review

Mar 18, 2019 Superb, quiet remarkably a brilliant film considered the budget and time it was shot. Fantastic performances by every actor See more
Kylo S Jan 30, 2019 Solid directing, and a fine performance from rising star Jack O'Connell.
Draco W Dec 4, 2018 Harsh look into the prison system, and families in them. The son gets transferred to the adult unit where his father is - and as a counselor tries to help him, things go a little sideways. See more
Luke L Sep 3, 2018 Exceptional acting , really opens a vivid door of description and detail to how prison life really is.
See more
Abraham P Jul 8, 2018 I'm not sure I have seen many (or any) father/son prison dramas, but in time for fathers day last month, I watched maybe the best one ever made. Starred Up is a British film starring Jack O'Connell and Ben Mendelsohn. Eric (O'Connelll) is a violent young offender who has recently been moved to adult prison. There he encounters a psychologist who tries to salvage what's left of Eric's humanity, all while being dragged into old habits by his fellow inmate/father (Mendelsohn). An easy consideration for any list of great prison movies Starred Up incorporates the crazed and sordid violence of a movie like Bronson, but takes the fanciful art style and replaces it with uncompromising realism. O'Connell, who had breakout roles in '71 and Unbroken, plays unhinged, and nobody does sinister unease better than Mendelsohn. Protip: You may want to at least start the movie with closed captions. Though they are speaking English, the accents, and the slang are so thick it bears little resemblance to any language spoken in America. See more
