Critics Consensus

Stargate has splashy visuals and James Spader to recommend it, but corny characterization and a clunky script makes this a portal to ho-hum.

Stargate is a blast from the past in many ways, but it imaginatively employs the latest special effects technology to give audiences new thrills. Go to Full Review

The kind of flick where Kurt Russell dispatches an Anubis-looking baddie after first telling him, in the kind of bon mot that elevates the thing an entire letter grade, "Give my regards to King Tut, a**hole." Go to Full Review
Jay Carr Boston Globe May 2, 2018
It works not because ridiculousness is concealed, but because ridiculousness on this scale becomes something else. Don't let anyone tell you that Stargate, lifeless script and all, isn't clunky fun, proudly trembling on the brink of classic camp. Go to Full Review

Not enough of the plot was designed well enough to stand out from the pack of other ’90s sci-fi flicks; creative complications are simply far too few. Go to Full Review

Emmerich's film may not be a lot of things, but as an action-packed, science-fiction rollercoaster ride, it's fabulous fun. Go to Full Review

Draco M Mar 27, 2019 This still holds up 24 years later. It's a complete blast. Roland Emmerich wanted to be a director after seeing A New Hope. The story is heavilly inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy. It's just a blast to watch. See more
Abraham S Mar 26, 2019 Not much for Emmerich movies, but this was a pretty straightforward film. Especially towards the 3rd act making for a quick and easy ending. See more
Mar 20, 2019 part indy jones, part star wars, part mummy, whats not to like???
Finn L Feb 24, 2019 Just re-watched on Showtime and "Stargate" is one of those near-great popcorn movies you can watch again and again - a la "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The story line is totally preposterous - especially given how much of the History Channel is now devoted to alien intervention here on Earth - yet it manages to pull it all off. James Spaders is fantastic as the nerdy linguist who solves in two weeks what others have been working on for two years (!). And Kurt Russel so hunky and taciturn, yet so vulnerable, as the colonel leading this expedition. Both are bolstered by strong supporting cast. Then the sets and scenes are great once they go through the stargate to the Egypt-like land on the other side of the universe. Most of all, the ever enjoyable trope of an oppressed people rising up against their overlord always in so affirming when so well done - and in this case the Egyptian god Ra, so ably and almost campily, but not quite, played by Jaye Davidson. "Stargate" a repeat viewing movie that always delivers. See more
Draco S Feb 5, 2019 Sci-fi movies usually have some way of explaining the reality thus connecting to real life. My only explanation for all character actions starting with basic - dont go inside the unknown space without gas mask quarantine suit, but it goes on. At 1 hour of watching this I had a feeling I am watching Dumb and Dumber competing for the lowest IQ. Nowadays even kids wont be satisfied with such sloppy script/screen play/plot/storyline. The best way to fix this movie would be to add background auditory laughter and applauds and Benny Hill music...perfection See more
Anakin G Jan 22, 2019 While the TV show cleans up a lot, this is great little SciFi.
