What to Know

Critics Consensus

There's no arguing with its impressive production values, but Stalingrad should have devoted more attention to the screenplay and spent less on special effects-enhanced spectacle.

The director's enthusiasm for the medium cannot be underestimated: warplanes loom from the screen, machineguns splatter in your face, and spectacular flaming flyovers over the Volga abound. Go to Full Review

Too often does [Bondarchuk] goad his characters to brim over with righteous bloodlust-and, despite the occasional obligatory misgiving about the barbarism of war, goads the audience to lust right along with them. Go to Full Review

Kylo M Nov 23, 2018 There is an excellent film which shares the same title as this that was made in about 1995 by German director Joseph Vilsmaier. It was told from the point of view of a small group of German soldiers who just wanted to return home and escape the fight that they didn't believe in. It was a well told story of the insanity of war and survival in the harshest of conditions. This film is told from the Russian perspective and is so patriotic and full of chest thumping moments I half expected Vladimir Putin to ride in bare chested on his stallion to save the day at the end. Visually it looks amazing and I did struggle to take my eyes off the screen because they have obviously piled a whole lot of cash into the visuals and it matches up to any of Hollywood's recent efforts on that front. It is just a shame they had no money left to pay a decent writer. Bizzarely, the film begins with our narrator arriving at the site of the Japanese tsunami back in 2011 and it is from here he narrates his back story to some trapped children underneath the rubble of a collapsed building. The children in question I am sure would have preferred him to get on with the job in hand. Anyhow, he taes us back to 1942 and the battle in question as he and his band of brothers are taking shelter in a wreck of a building where some locals are hiding from the Nazis. From this point on the Nazis do dispicable things and the Russians run out of the building in slow motion screaming , firing their guns and performing slo-mo dives and jumps while bombs explode around them. That's pretty much it, oh and there is also some opera. If you're looking for Saving Private Ryan but a little more Call of Duty crossed with 300 then this is the movie for you. If not, seek out the older but far superior German movie. See more
Leia G Jul 12, 2017 This is an unusual film for the uk market. Russian actors are dubbed using American actors so the lip sync is out and the German parts are sub titled. But it does bring to life what it was like to be in Stalingrad and the opponents so close to each other. I watched this in 3D using my projector and it was an immersive experience. It wasn't a waste if 2 hours. See more
Theodore P May 22, 2017 Just about remains engaging enough, the characterisation is a bit flimsy. Action pieces more showy than visceral, reflecting the film's need to illustrate how much money has been thrown at it. See more
Albus W Apr 24, 2017 interesting look at the human side of this tragic war battle between Germany & Russians
Kylo P Feb 2, 2017 awesome film liked everything except the over use of special fx
Leia R Mar 21, 2014 This is not an epic look at the battle that turned the tide of WWII. This is a small, melodramatic story about two small groups of soldiers fighting over the same building in Stalingrad. Although, they don't fight very much. They spend more time falling in love with the local female population. While there are a couple of cool action shots, there is no significant battle scene to speak of. It wasn't a terrible film, but it was quite the let down. See more
