Stalag 17 survives the jump from stage to screen with flying colors, thanks to Billy Wilder's typically sterling direction and a darkly funny script.

The suspect sergeant, an opportunist hated and patronized by the men he exploits, is extraordinarily well played by William Holden. Bidding neither for sympathy nor any particular understanding. Holden's Sefton is no conventional war play hero. Go to Full Review

Billy Wilder, one of the most caustic-minded of Hollywood's writer-director-producers, has taken a stage hit by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski and preserved its essential humor and tragedy with no dulling of its corrosive edges. Go to Full Review

Harry R Mar 2, 2019 Seemed like a POW farce. It made the Nazi into imbeciles.
Poe S Dec 31, 2018 A true classic. While the slapstick is laid on pretty thick at times, the ensuing drama and tension plays out extremely well, culminating with a truly satisfying ending. William Holden plays his role superbly and the Oscar he was awarded for his performance was truly earned. One of the better and more unique war flicks worth seeing. See more
Leia L May 5, 2018 I can see why William Holden won an Academy Award for his performance. He doesn't seem like he's playing a part at all, but that he is his character. The script is great, the suspense is great, and every action in the film serves a purpose. There is a lot of good humor in this film, and also it touches on why jumping to conclusions can lead to big mistakes. Stalag 17 sits well in the company of all other POW films, and it's a great WWII period piece as well. Billy Wilder is a master of cinema. See more
Albus R Oct 23, 2017 Stalag 17 is a movie that definitely has some tonal shifts in it. At times it is very lighthearted almost like a Hogan’s Heroes type of humor. The different personalities of the POWs makes for some good chuckles when that’s what they’re attempting. However, there are other times when the mood of the film transitions and things get more serious. This is a German POW camp during WWII, so it makes sense that there would be some heavy stuff going on. The movie created a fairly good mystery about who was the snitch, because we could safely assume as an audience that William Holden wasn’t really the guilty party. I’m still not decided on whether the shifts in tone always work, but it never felt awkward so I just went with it. The choice to use a voiceover was not a smart one for a number of reasons. For one, it was a pretty lazy way to set up the story. Also, Cookie wasn’t a significant character and I kept wondering why they chose him as the person presenting this story. Finally, there just wasn’t enough voiceover included. If you’re going to go this route for setting up your story, then there should be more moments where the voice shows up, to transition from one set piece to the next. It’s just one nitpick I had with the movie, there were a few other flaws but I don’t want to seem like I’m trashing this enjoyable film. I had a good time watching Stalag 17. It has some good actors, and they clearly are having an enjoyable time making the movie, which translates into a good time for me too. See more
Albus W Jul 24, 2017 Wilder's film is a wonderful and poignant love letter to prisoners of war and there prevailing of the awful and horrifying acts befell upon them. Wilder is a master of camera work, his long unbroken takes are a thing of immersive and engaging brilliance. See more
Abraham R Oct 10, 2010 Even in such a hard situation as it describes, Wilder finds his way to create a comedy.
