What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though the genre is well worn at this point, director Jim Mickle focuses on strong characterization and eerie atmosphere to craft an effective apocalyptic vampire chiller that also manages to pack a mean punch.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Sep 12, 2011
Mickle's observation of a devastated working-class America is so sharp that the horror elements, though effectively handled, come to feel like an afterthought. Go to Full Review

Like Romero, Mickle has a pragmatic attitude to genre convention: even the corniest stereotypes can be turned to new purposes. Go to Full Review

Somehow its posse of American travellers, attempting to reach the Eden of Canada while assailed by vampires, seems a little dull. Go to Full Review

It's hard to put a fresh spin on the vampire subgenre, so even a slightly new perspective feels like an even bigger success. Go to Full Review

With sure-handed direction driving a moody tone, the steadily paced and character-driven story proves to be more than your average monster fare. Go to Full Review
Jason Best Movie Talk Dec 5, 2020
The pace is deliberately measured, with time to spare for the orphan hero's elegiac voiceover narration. When the action comes, however, it does so in savage and bloody bursts. Go to Full Review

Han S Mar 12, 2019 You have already settled for an average zombie flick at best, and then some film you have never heard of comes along and proves greatness is still possible. I'm genuinely surprised Stake Land has managed to stay below the radar, because it's a really good movie. The human survivors face a zombie-vampire hybrid, where your brains are at risk after sunset. Additionally, there are unfriendly groups of humans waiting to prey on you. It's a nice setup. What Stake Land manages to do is tell a compelling story, deliver competent acting, and somehow stretch their budget to make the landscape look the way it's supposed to after society has fallen. I never felt like I was watching a B movie, despite the group of unknown actors. Had they cast a couple mega stars in the lead roles, this would have been a huge hit. The style resembles that of The Walking Dead series, with a bit of Zombieland's social dynamic thrown in. I liked how they gave the audience glimpses of the outbreak through old newspapers or magazines lying about. The pacing was just right--dramatic elements mixed with plenty of zombie slaughter. Reminded me some of The Road, but with zombies and less gloom. A movie like this makes up for the hundred or so average ones I had to sift through before finding it. Rating: B+ See more
Finn W Aug 30, 2018 Sorry, critics. This movie has a good story, a good script, a good director, good actors, and it's all-around fun to watch. I didn't have high hopes for it. Almost didn't bother. Glad I did. You can pick it apart if you want, but if you just want to enjoy a flick, this one's great. I watched it twice. See more
George W Jun 30, 2018 A noble post apocalyptic vampire film. It's true that the genre is really worn out, and that there have been some terrible entries, but Stake Land is one of the best of the 2010s. For a low budget film, the performances by a bunch of unknown actors are surprisingly strong, and the special effects too. Its grainy, gritty throwback to older apocalyptic films like the George A. Romero zombie flicks is impressive, and the movie also has tones of bloodshed and gory vampire killings to entertain horror fans. But it also has a bit of a dramatic feel to it, with the relationship between two different characters. Overall, Stake Land is an achievement in the horror, and yet is unfortunately overlooked. Han R Jun 20, 2018 The usual tiresome Hollywood inversion of good and evil. The strawman portrayal of so-called Christians is absurd and everything is derivative. The writers are not very original and have a poor grasp about how human nature really works. See more
Jun 2, 2018 Stake Land has strong characters, a lucid script, plenty of action, and something more substantial to make it better-than-average. See more
Anakin R Apr 1, 2018 A zombie apocalypse flick except with vampires. It's been done before, and it's been done better.
