A boardinghouse for female theater actresses gets a new arrival in the form of Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn), an upper-class woman pursuing her dreams against her wealthy father's wishes. At first, her status makes her unpopular with the other boarders, particularly her roommate, Jean (Ginger Rogers). As Terry becomes better acquainted with the other girls and their shared ambitions, rivalry -- both professional and romantic -- explodes among them.

Stage Door crackles with zingers ad-libbed by a cast that includes Ginger Rogers, Katharine Hepburn, Eve Arden, and Lucille Ball. Go to Full Review

While it sometimes lapses into pure corn, it nevertheless manages to capture the manic-depressive dormitory atmosphere of young actresses trying to make it in New York. Go to Full Review

It is funny in spots, emotionally effective occasionally, and generally brisk and entertaining. Go to Full Review

Incidentally, the stage play was thrown away for the photoplay; they kept the name and locale. Great improvement. Ginger Rogers steals the show. Go to Full Review

The result is a remarkably fine film, with at least three performances so outstanding that it is hard to say whether Ginger Rogers and Katharine Hepburn steal the picture from each other, or the newcomer, Andrea Leeds, steals it from both. Go to Full Review

The entire cast is stellar, including little knowns Lucille Ball -- "my big break"-- Eve Arden, "real discovery" Andrea Leeds, Jack Carson, and a 14-year-old Ann Miller who lied about her age. Go to Full Review

Rey W Mar 27, 2019 What we have in Stage Door is as close to perfection as you will get. A play turned into a film about a real-life situation and place. A rooming house for women wanting to be involved in the theatre. We get the best of all worlds here as this limits the cast to mainly women, which is novel, since almost all films are heavily male dominated. The women chosen for these roles would go on to further fame and become household names as their careers developed, another novelty. The non-stop action and the interest the script maintains throughout the duration of the film is admirable, and we're not likely to see another film like this one ever made again. The subjective feel of the film is quite different than normal due to its pacing, style, and the manner in which the women face conflict and resolution. As they face it with more layers of understanding than men do, and react with more kindness and love, we are given insight into how women approach problems and deal with them as opposed to typical male delusions and obfuscations. Stage Door is one of a kind, an island in a sea of male domination. That these women cope and emerge victorious is a testament to their spirit and resolve. Stage Door is everything a film should be and a little more. It's not only great and leaves a long lasting impression, but it serves as a positive role model for films of the future. Those films were to come, but none of them ever achieved the power, strength, and wonderment of Stage Door. See more
Theodore L Oct 24, 2018 Stage Door is a decent film. It is about a chronicle of the ambitions, dreams, and disappointments of aspiring actresses who all live in the same boarding house. Katherine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Gregory La Cava did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor and drama. See more
Abraham P Jul 1, 2018 Classic rendering of a stage to screen comedy of the day. Hepburn v Ginger Rodgers is exquisite. Also featuring Lucille Ball ( still a brunette), Eve Arden, Ann Miller at 16, and Oscar nominated Andrea Leeds. See more
Finn G Jun 4, 2017 One of my all time favorite movies; it has a great crew of female characters
Theodore P Oct 5, 2010 Film itself is not too much (2.5 stars), but final scenes from Hepburn are fabulous and make the movie worth watching.
Kylo L Aug 13, 2007 A fun and witty/bitchy glimpse into the backstage/offstage life of a group of young actresses. The cast is sublime. Even thought the ending is a little on the corny side, this film is still pure pleasure. See more
