The film is strewn with casual poetry. Its colors, often blue and green, are muted and weak, like a tear-spattered love letter. Go to Full Review

Spirited Away is no secondhand fairytale retread; it's a fully imagined universe, populated by wondrous beings and haunting landscapes. Go to Full Review

The plot starts suffering from dèjá vu before it's even half over. There are only so many octopus men, stink spirits and pig people you can take before they all start to blend together. Go to Full Review

Aided by fine sound design and an exemplary musical score from regular Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi, the film boasts the detail and visual scale that mark Miyazaki's inimitable style. Simply perfect, from beginning to end. Go to Full Review

Albus M Apr 28, 2019 Many consider this to be Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece and magnum opus. One viewing is enough to see why. This is perhaps one of the best animated films you'll ever see. On top of a great unique story that makes sure people will love it. You have absolutely astonishing animation and color. An immensely imaginative level of world-building. A great relatable main character as it showcases her flawless character development with leadership, determination, and hope. Do I need to say more. I guarantee you'll love it just like everyone else. See more
Ron P Apr 28, 2019 This movie breathes. Just breathes.
Leia W Apr 23, 2019 Dull but anime goodness
Hermione M Apr 15, 2019 Absolutely perfect filmmaking.
Poe R Apr 10, 2019 Director Hayao Miyazaki is a master in the field; he's brought to life some of the most memorable animated characters outside of Disney themselves. Studio Ghibli is a Japenese animation studio (on the same level as Disney, and they've only been around since '85). Spirited Away is a story about a Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl who, while moving to a new city, has an adventure of a lifetime. She enters the spirit world of Japanese folklore, a world of gods, and spirits, where everything you think you know is wrong. It ranks on several of the best films of the 21st century lists in the top five (and that placement is more than deserved). If you've never watched an anime, this would be my suggestion on where to start. If you enjoy it, you can move onto Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Akira, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies (careful, this one can make even the toughest person shed a tear!), or a countless list of others that offer up something that traditional American animation doesn't. The best thing about foreign animation is that you don't have to rely on reading subtitles; most have been dubbed in English (oftentimes being a seamless transition). See more
