Ron S Apr 28, 2019 Spider-Man Homecoming is a fun addition to the MCU. Tom Holland is the best spider-man we've had yet because he actually feels and acts like a high school student. This movie is fun to see Spider-Man go through his life of fighting crime while also fighting the battle of high school along the way. This movie is fun all the way through with a lot of humor as well. See more
Luke G Apr 28, 2019 Homecoming is the newest reimagining of Spider-Man we've had (this time with a younger aunt May). It paints spider man as a still young and naive kid thanks to Tom Holland's performance and uses that for a basis of growth. The movie spends little to no time at all introducing Peter, as Marvel assumes that after five movies you already know the character. Peter learns to find the balance between getting help from others and doing things alone. Also like Tony Stark does in Iron Man 3, who is his mentor by the way, he learns how to be a hero without the suit. The love interest, Liz, serves little purpose but Ned is incredibly funny as a sidekick. Overall just a fun version of Spider-Man. See more
Ron W Apr 28, 2019 Though maybe not brandishing the extra stylistic oomph Sam Raimi brought to the web-head over a decade before, 'Homecoming' does right by its friendly neighborhood hero by allotting equal time to the guy in and outside of the suit. Brimming with youthful energy and an endearingly pure heart, Tom Holland is amazing, spectacular, and possibly the most superior incarnation of Peter and Spider-Man put on the big screen so far. And rather than retreading the same, thoroughly covered material again, the film's narrative smartly follows a more thematic origin story as Peter bonds with Tony Stark and tries to prove his worth to his new father figure as an Avenger. 'Homecoming' also marks the MCU's first truly great villain in Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes/Vulture. As a working-class laborer just looking to provide for his family after being screwed over by the man, the changes made to the character not only resonate stronger than Toomes' comic book counterpart, but also surprisingly synergistically within the rest of the film and the MCU's greater cohesive context. Luke R Apr 28, 2019 entertaining and super good. Spider-man in her potrayed as a teenager, which is quiet fun to see how great Tom Holland is.
Hagrid W Apr 27, 2019 This movie is SO AWKWARD. It's like one of those tv shows your local network produces and fills with awkward jokes. It's insulting to the fans and the nerd culture that found the original so inspiring. It took me 5 hours just to get through the first hour of the movie. The premise seems to be spiderman is a wannabe avenger who is an obsessed nerd and is doing everything wrong as he struggles to become a superhero. The doing everything wrong part feels like it's trying to be a joke, but it's just more awkwardness piled onto a mountain of already awkward jokes. The entire school section of Spiderman is ruined. Filled with insulting interactions between nerds who are excited about super heroes to the point of obsession and are portrayed as downright annoying. As a nerd, I take offense that I or anyone else would ever act like that. I guess this is the sort of writer who has absolutely no clue about nerd culture and just got hired to write a diversity focused Spiderman. They also shoehorned in a tonne of diversity. When diversity is done right I'm fine with it, like Malcolm in the middle with his best friend stevie the black crippled paraplegic. He gets entire episodes dedicated to him and he's a great character. This section contains spoilers. One of the core ideas in this show is that spiderman is like some gradeschool trainee avenger that's too young to actually handle anything. They basically borrowed the idea from the cartoon and it's just as bad here as it was there. One of the worst moments of the series was actually the movies most famous and anticipated moments. The moment where spiderman holds the boat together with his own webs and body. Because that only lasts for a second, and peter fails miserably. Only to be saved by Iron Man. Then Iron Man gives him the baby talk "I think you've done enough" bs. This whole movie feels like it was written by someone who hates spiderman and wants everyone to think Iron Man and the Avengers are better. But that's the thing, spiderman has the better source material. Spiderman was done first and most by the movie industry for a reason, everyone loves the source material... Spiderman Homecoming is an insult to the core fans and the source material. See more
Albus S Apr 27, 2019 This enjoyable take on the web-slinger isn't as angsty as his forebears, but as a result he doesn't take us on the emotional ride that they did. The many ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe start off well done, but become a little too frequent to the point were they start to take focus away from the Spider-Man story. The reliance on tech makes it feel more like an Iron Man film at points and removes some of the peril. However, the third act redeems proceedings when this is taken away and then used to up the stakes and teach a lesson. The fairly bland role Michael Keaton had been given up to this point also morphs into something creepier and scarier by bringing things back home. See more
