Covert government assassin Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is killed after being double-crossed by his boss, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). Upon arriving in Hell, Simmons is offered an opportunity to return to Earth if he's willing to lead an evil army. He accepts, and is reincarnated as a "Hellspawn" -- a twisted, horribly disfigured version of his former self. However, Spawn serves as a force of good, much to the dismay of the Devil's henchman, a wicked clown (John Leguizamo).

Critics Consensus

Spawn is an overbearing, over-violent film that adds little to the comic book adaptation genre.

This barely coherent hunk of junk is like a cheap horror film with only a suggestion of the grisliness that appeals to fans of cheap horror films. Go to Full Review

It's simply a parade of toys and tricks, without a jot of playfulness, knowing humour or campery to endear itself. Go to Full Review

The film gives you the pleasurably junky sensation of living inside an apocalyptic videogame. Go to Full Review

Spawn may have a rather dark, morbid narrative, filled with over-the-top performances and ridiculously cheesy special effects, but taken altogether, it makes for a somewhat amusing & entertaining comic book outing. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, as a product of the '90s, the film relies heavily on dated, primitive, terribly unconvincing computer graphics. Go to Full Review

Draco S Mar 26, 2019 We have some impressive make-up, but also the worst CGI in movie history. It looks extremely fake without anything convincing. The story was flimsy to its terrible script. Which brought nothing of value to the comic books credibility. Plenty of undeveloped characters, a lame villain, and of course, the atrocious effects. We deserve better than this. See more
Ron S Mar 10, 2019 If only the whole movie had worked as decent as the cape and the clown. All scenes in hell were literally rendered there. Contemporary games had better graphics. See more
Jan 23, 2019 this movie should have been good, but it wasnt. it was lazy, not funny, everything about it is off. screw this movie
Sep 15, 2018 If this movie had a better writer, director, and a bigger budget, it might've been good.
Aug 22, 2018 It really makes me sad to see an amazing character like Spawn get such a poorly made movie.
May 24, 2018 For a 1990's film I must say it was ahead of it's time. This is one of those movies I saw as a kid as and stuck with me as one of the best movies of all time. I am a little disappointed with all these negative recent reviews. I feel as though it is being judged in today's standards and not appreciate for what it was two decades ago. It is worth watching!
