With the help of their high school's newest teacher (George Lopez), four Hispanic students form a robotics club. Although they have no experience, the youths set their sights on a national robotics contest. With $800 and parts scavenged from old cars, they build a robot and compete against reigning champion MIT. Along the way, the students learn not only how to build a robot but something far more important: how to forge bonds that will last a lifetime.

Critics Consensus

Spare Parts is effective enough to do in a pinch for inspirational sports drama fans - although most of them will have seen these story beats hit more powerfully before.

Though based on a Wired magazine story, this sticks closely to the formulas of inspirational-teacher and sports-team dramas; distinguishing it from the pack is the fact that all four students who formed the club were undocumented. Go to Full Review

The film refreshingly portrays its kids as part of a diverse group trying to succeed in a country in which they can never find secure footing. Go to Full Review

Sequences and scenes end unceremoniously, everyone in the movie seems to know each other's backstory before they're properly introduced, and mild jokes land with uncertainty. Go to Full Review

It's a positive story, filled to the brim with love, fun, and cultural pride. Go to Full Review

Even while McNamara hasn't made a great or even very daring film, it's one that was worth being made, and certainly one deserving to be seen despite its formulaic, safe tone. Go to Full Review

Spare Parts will likely be a crowd-pleaser, especially to those familiar with the story, but those expecting something new to be brought to the table are out of luck. Go to Full Review

Hermione W Mar 13, 2019 Incredible and inspiring story
Sep 16, 2018 this movie couldn't be more of a cliche
Harry S Feb 28, 2018 At the beginning, the plot doesn't flow well and the character development feels a tad wonky but "Spare Parts" does prove to get better as the film progresses. Once the film hits its stride, it has a lot of heart, charm, drama and humor. Additionally, the cast was fantastic and the ending of the film was incredibly inspirational and touching. It has its hiccups but nothing that kept it from being a decent film about a collection of underdogs achieving their dream. Hello! My name is Rev. Finn S Sep 29, 2017 Love this movie! I show it to my robotics class in a town with a lot of immigrants. So good on so many different levels.
Ron W Jan 19, 2017 An easy movie to miss, I caught it on tv by happenstance. I was hooked til the end. If you want a feel good story for the day, amidst all the bs happening in the world, this is one of those based on real events cool story movies. It touches on some very overlooked immigrant issues. Side note, anyone in love with science and engineering should watch this, very inspirational. See more
