Hermione S Mar 30, 2018 Hands down one of the best movies out there. It is a straight 2-hour space-related stuff. The very first scene is Gagarin managing to land a defective combat aircraft. Too many movies nowadays pick an interesting topic then put that concept to the back and focus on the mundane lives of the main characters. Here you get to see some of the characters background but that is a tiny version of the total screen time which is amazing and refreshing. It is especially enjoyable because it is NOT a piece of political propaganda in favor of Soviet Rusia or the Communist ideology. I need to mention this because I think it is relevant in this scenario. This movie actually manages to be self-critical of the circumstances of the time. For example, in a couple of lines of dialogue, Gagarin casually lets people know that he lost his father and lived under poor conditions thanks to the revolutionaries. Regarding to the historical aspect, I am glad that the people who made this movie did not made up some drama or changed the facts to make it entertaining. There is a climax (maybe more than one) but it is based on real stuff that went wrong for real during the mission. Even the last part where they head back to Earth indeed happened. It is hard to come by such stories showing real-life events as opposed to based on real events with an absurd use of artistic license to make more... conventional, commercial? I am just glad people like this exist that are actually trying to do good stuff. Worth the time and money. You may need to sit through closed captions unless there is a voiceover version in English out there. Again, totally worth it. See more
