California couple Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) set out to make a documentary meant to expose a charismatic cult leader named Maggie (Brit Marling) as a fraud. Maggie claims to be from the year 2054 and is seemingly allergic to almost everything in her environment; she lives in a basement, subsisting on canned oxygen, homegrown food and the blood of her acolytes. Though at first, Peter and Lorna are adamant that Maggie is a fake, they both soon fall under her spell.

Sound of My Voice is a too-rare example of intelligent, ambitious genre filmmaking. Go to Full Review

Either Maggie is the real deal, or she's lying, or we never find out. In any case, anticlimax seems inevitable. Go to Full Review

Walks the fine line of something psychological and supernatural, not only keeping the audience invested throughout, but also delivers a fulfilling explanation for the mysterious situation. Go to Full Review

As with much of Marlings work, audiences can read all the plot points of the movie in more than one way, which only adds to the hypnotic, beguiling quality of the story. But, as with many of lifes questions, the mystery might be an answer unto itself. Go to Full Review
David Bax Battleship Pretension Mar 4, 2021
Sound of My Voice is the first feature from a young director and these drawbacks are indicative of that greenness. Still, Batmanglij has made a better-than-average genre film that does exactly what genre films are supposed to do. Go to Full Review

Abraham S Apr 13, 2019 In Sound of My Voice, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a couple and documentary filmmaking team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, Peter and Lorna start to question their objective and each other and they unravel the secrets of Maggie's underworld. Acted with a subtle nuances throughout, this film's ambiguous ending will elicit much discussion, while the film's delicately handled politics are refreshingly two-sided. Sound of My Voice is a too-rare example of intelligent, ambitious genre filmmaking. See more
Feb 16, 2019 What kind of ending was that?? They said they planned to make a trilogy. Where are they? I need to know more.
Poe W Dec 16, 2017 A very well told story about a cult with cool handshakes and seemingly little to offer on the surface besides that. I loved the surprise ending. See more
Leia W Dec 4, 2017 **Not a FULL Review** *Short sum-up of my thoughts and opinion* I thought this movie was not too shabby, but not great either, I kept waiting for something to make it an outstanding movie because of the ratings I had seen and reviews were mostly pretty good. But the rating here is actually pretty darn accurate for once in my opinion, this movie is about a 7/10 or so, give or take. It takes what could have been amazing and turns it into, "okay, that was a good movie, but would I watch it again? Probably not" type movie. Worth a watch in my opinion? Yes. Am I crazy about it? No. But at least I didn't waste my time like some movies do. See more
Albus L Sep 23, 2017 If you are a fan of The OA you really need to watch this. It's the main star & the creators first collaboration and there are soooo many parallels. The cult leader has a darker side to Prairie I didn't like, but it still draws you in. Articles comparing the two are intriguing. See more
Ron W Dec 30, 2016 This film had such potential but seemed incomplete. It was like a long trailer for a great film that never finished production. Yet it was worth watching and quite enjoyable. Sometimes a film is worth more for what it triggers in the imagination than what it dictates. The empty places in the story fleshed themselves out in my dreams that night. See more
