What to Know

Critics Consensus

It has a likable cast and loads of CGI spectacle, but for all but the least demanding viewers, The Sorcerer's Apprentice will be less than spellbinding.

It's a whole load of silly but there's enough fun to make this a decent slice of forgettable escapism. Go to Full Review

The plot verges on incoherence, but The Sorcerer's Apprentice is entertaining enough if you can forgive the presence of Cage, whose brand of glum camp hasn't grown any fresher with the years. Go to Full Review

Cage and Baruchel fail to generate a connection and, apart from Molina's Oscar Wilde impersonation, there isn't much to laugh at -- or thrill to, for that matter, since the action has been choreographed with the nerveless competence of an arcade game. Go to Full Review

The whole movie seems to spill out onto the floor in a stinking mess, and when it’s over, the audience is left to ponder how—given its expensive price tag, notable stars, and an admittedly interesting premise—the result could be so awful. Go to Full Review

It's clear that there is no respect for the classics. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Sadly, there is precious little left of the genius that once was Cage, the man whose electric insanity made instant classics of Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona. Go to Full Review

Finn R Apr 9, 2019 Funny, creative magic scenes, awesome special effects!
Albus R Dec 31, 2018 A pretty good first movie in what could be a series. I want to either go back in time or fast forward.
Draco S Dec 17, 2018 Boring Nicolas Cage plays generic magic guy in a bland YA fantasy. Also there's a brief scene that resembles a segment from Fantasia if you squint. See more
Aug 13, 2018 Pretty much garbage. Not only were the setting generally boring, it was also very lacking in creativity and might only be suitable for young children. it felt like they were trying to make it cool and even a little bit realistic, but it's honestly one of the worst movies out there. nothing made proper sense and what annoyed me the most were honestly their pathetic attempts at magic. not only is the action depressingly lacking, it's also written like turn-based combat where you finish your shot then I can do mine. how they utilized magic almost made me cry while cringing, I mean, wow... they're waving their hands around all the time and then they shoot out beams or plasma balls which also travel at ridiculously slow speeds. but they never stop waving their hands around. They also like using the kamehameha pose, come on. tiringly bad. See more
Anakin S Jan 18, 2018 The Sorcerer's Apprentice comes off as forgettable. It is a boring movie.
Kylo S Dec 10, 2017 Enjoyable. Nic Cage is as fun as ever, and remarkably restrained, and the magic is nicely realised
