It's a good entry of its type. Go to Full Review

Despite all the accepted props, from the lonely Southern plantation set in a miasmic bog to the squeaking bats and creaking coffins, this thriller is a pretty pallid offering. Go to Full Review

The script is far from wonderful, and offers Siodmak little to get his teeth into, notwithstanding a beautifully atmospheric first entry for the Count (Chaney and coffin rising from the misty depths of a lake) and an effective finale. Go to Full Review

A tedious tale with perhaps the worst performance ever in a film by Lon Chaney, Jr. A fencepost has more charisma than Chaney as Count Alucard. Painfully slow and awkward. Go to Full Review

Chaney is the least magnetic actor to don the Universal cape and fangs, though Siodmak rolls with it and surveys the studio's vampiristic paraphernalia with humorous verve Go to Full Review

While it is quite silly and suffers from one of the worst casting decisions in the 33 year history of the classic Universal horror, Son of Dracula is actually halfway decent. Go to Full Review

Albus R Jan 21, 2017 It's sets look great and it's very atmospheric. Chaney does better than expected as Dracula, Jr., whose goal is now to own property in the southeast. That oddness aside, it's a treat to see Chaney shapeshift from a bat or smoke into his Vampire form. The finale is exceptional, as well. The movie is not as memorable as Bela's film or Dracula's Daughter, but this is a worthy entry into the Universal Dracula series. See more
Anakin R Jan 10, 2017 A wealthy southern family finds their plantation under siege shortly after it's visited by a mysterious Hungarian nobleman named Count Alucard (Lon Chaney Jr., not exactly suited to his role). The movie, within its first five minutes, feels the need to spell out that this guy's name is "Dracula" backwards, so it shouldn't surprise anyone to find that just about every other plot point is telegraphed just as obviously. Robert Siodmak brings expressionistic directing that emphasizes mood, dread, and lots of scene-blocking that makes excellent use of both fog and shadow. That, coupled with nifty special effects from John P. Fulton and an eerie score composed by Hans J. Salter, puts Son of Dracula a few notches above the usual sort of horror movie that Universal was assembling in the 1940's. This film is pulpy trash as a whole, but the high level of craftsmanship makes it into a pretty solid B-movie. See more
