While none of the songs stand out, despite the pedigree of their authorship, Smurfs (2025) is a reasonably non-offensive children’s movie.

Smurfs is sadly another bland & forgettable outing for the beloved gang that once again skimps on its most important elements of story & character development.

The picture borrows unashamedly and blatantly from Inside Out and the Spiderverse films, and the dimension-hopping plot line is tiresome.

seems to be running away from the source material and previous iterations as fast as possible, as if there was never any merit to the Smurfs at all. It is instead made by and for the Gargamels who secretly seek to destroy the whole smurfing thing.

It’s enjoyable enough and mercifully short, even with the Rihanna songs crammed in to inspire downloads.

Despite having plot turns as old as Papa Smurf, this movie does manage to entertain. Director Chris Miller, best known for Puss In Boots, throws in so many gags enough of them land.

The uneven mix of live-action and animation, coupled with a lackluster story and underused talent, keeps it from reaching the heights of its predecessors.

It’s still IP for IP’s sake, and — noting periodically creative animation and occasionally clever wordplay — I’m not arguing that it’s “good.” If your younger kids want to check it out, you might find it exactly entertaining enough.

Directed by Chris Miller, not to be confused with director Christopher Miller who co-directed The Lego Movie, doesn't quite have a finetuned vision here for Smurfs.

When you see Papa Smurf DJ'ing you realise the team here know nothing about the original Smurfs at all. Too many songs, not enough plot and a bad attempt to re-invent Smurf folklore results in a real mess.

Hitting her second film as a voice actor, Rihanna knocks it out of the park. Her cool, relaxed, subtle vibe works well for Smurfette, especially when other characters are spinning out around her. Smurfs is fun and I dug it.

When I first encountered them on Saturday-morning television as a kid, the Smurfs cartoons struck me as inane, inert and innocuous, and the passage of 40-plus years has not made them seem any more ane, ert, or nocuous.
