Yvonne (Lynn Redgrave) and her best friend, Brenda (Rita Tushingham), head for the big city -- in this case, London -- with dreams of hitting the big time. But when they arrive and quickly lose their savings to a robber, they find that city life is tougher than expected, and success may be more elusive than they planned. The pair separates, and after Yvonne unexpectedly turns a bad song into a hit single, she begins to wonder about the cost of fame and the whereabouts of her old friend.

Smashing Time finds little fresh in the subject, though given its basic idea it might well have done so. Go to Full Review

But most of this the film is a delight, especially scenes revolving around Yvonne's continual abuse of Brenda. Go to Full Review

It's on beat and offbeat, a Mod film that makes the most of the Mack Sennett tradition, a satire on swinging London that swings to its own London rhythm. Go to Full Review

Leia M Sep 1, 2017 This is one of the strangest and least categorisable sixties comedies I've ever seen. It's about two Northern girls discovering London (Lynn Redgrave and Rita Tushingham riffing on the roles that made them famous) and is stuffed with cameos by recognisable character actors of the time, like Irene Handl, John Clive, Peter Jones and Anna Quayle. Parts of it are excruciatingly dreadful, but other sequences are genuinely funny. And the incidental shots of sixties London are strangely poignant. Worth persevering with. See more
