What to Know

Critics Consensus

A game Julia Roberts gives it her all, but Sleeping with the Enemy is one stalker thriller that's unlikely to inspire many obsessions of its own.

Sleeping With the Enemy is a flat tire of a movie. Looks good -- white sidewalls, chrome spokes -- but it flaps and clunks and never gets to vroom. Go to Full Review

It's the sort of movie where all of the characters and plot moves (if one wants to call them that) are tailored to the thriller mechanics and have no existence apart from their crude functionality. Go to Full Review

One of the great cautionary tales in cinema, boasting an excellent performance by Roberts and a satisfying (if protracted) finale. Go to Full Review

Sleeping with the Enemy is an extremely over the top 'woman in peril' film that stars Julia Roberts' magnificent locks and Patrick Bergin's exquisite moustache. It's lurid, but this domestic abuse thriller holds up on a rewatch. Go to Full Review

Roberts evokes sympathy, not just for playing the victim of an unforgivably bad husband, but for becoming the victim of an unforgivably bad movie. Go to Full Review

George W Jan 17, 2019 If only earth was a simple as a 90s Julia Roberts movie.
Rey R Dec 6, 2018 The scariest part of this movie was that guys ugly ass mustache. I've never wished so hard to be able to pass a razor through a tv screen. Oh, and it perpetrates this horrible stereotypical narrative about abuse that should infuriate everyone who tries to watch it. This is the type of movie that contributes to public ignorance but it still gets replayed every damn day on Rai See more
Luke S Oct 6, 2018 A wife fakes her own death to escape from her rich abusive husband. She then flees to the mid-west to try to rebuild her life under a different name so that he can't trace her. Will she succeed? This is a Julia Roberts movie. If there isn't a big enough warning to stay away I don't know what is (although The Mexican is a great film but that's an exception in her oeuvre). Everything from the scenes where she gets a beating (she's like Bambi in these scenes- innocent and a pure victim) through to the scenes where she is predictably 'learning to live again' in her new locale (there is one scene where her and her new boyfriend have great fun trying on different hats. I kid you not. It's as vomit-inducing as it sounds) to the final scenes where her hubby who has now traced her and seems to have morphed into a really rubbish version of Michael Myers, is big dumb Hollywood crud on every level.  I hate films that don't warrant their audience with one iota of intelligence. This is one of those films. It took in megabucks at the box-office. In fact how this was made as a film to be shown in cinemas is beyond me. This feels like a Hallmark TV movie.  If you want to see a great, intelligent film about abuse and stalker-esque behaviour in a relationship, please watch Play Misty For Me instead. If you want to see a film about an abused woman who isn't a victim seek out Ms.45.  Avoid this rancid film. See more
Hagrid M Mar 3, 2018 This film left me deeply conflicted. It has some strong points: Julia Roberts is outstanding, playing this movie straight and being completely believable; and both Patrick Bergin and Kevin Anderson are also very good; and the film deals with important themes of spousal violence and sexual obsession. However, the movie itself is a manipulative, predictable, thriller/slasher/horror piece - thankfully without the typical horror-movie other-worldly devices, make-up and monsters. It worth seeing, to decide for yourself. See more
Finn R Jan 3, 2018 For the start of 2018 I would like to show you list of one of a cycle of thrillers made during the early 1990s which were set around husband and wife characters which I've already reviewed. Deceived which is forgettable, Consenting Adults which I didn't like, Presumed Innocent and Sleeping with the Enemy is the film which I'm going to do. Of course, there are some thrillers that I haven't seen and yes, I have seen some of them which I've already reviewed. Sometimes they're been done to death like the stories the filmmakers had put out is the same story they put out so many times. OK, so Sleeping with the Enemy is the story about Laura Burney escapes his abusive husband and start a new life over. And that's it, that is for the fact that I'm not spoiling the film for people who haven't seen it which is what thrillers for. Some of the scenes are chilling and will keep you on the edge of the seat. I actually love the scene where Laura's new boyfriend who is her next door neighbor singing the jet song and the two couple dancing to "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. I can also remember watching the music video of it on TV with Julia Roberts in it. For thrillers that are recycled goes, this one is underrated. I guess you guys will be entertained by thrillers that will keep you on the edge of the seat that is if you watch them alone. I know I did. See more
Oct 11, 2017 for me, it just works. Julia is terrific, Patrick is chillingly tarryfing, kevin is cool and makes you understand why Julia falls inlove with him. everything works. the scenery, the camera work, everything is great here. i admit, it does have it's plot holes, but it didn't bother me too much. i enjoyed it very much. and the soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith is SUBLIME! all in all, a a very good movie.
