From his home in Ilium, N.Y., optometrist Billy Pilgrim narrates the tale of how he came to be "unstuck in time." Kidnapped by aliens and living in comfort with his assigned mate, B-movie starlet Montana Wildhack, Billy experiences the events of his life in random order, flitting between his past as an American prisoner of war in World War II, to his humdrum middle-class life in the present-day, to his future as a zoo curiosity on the planet Tralfamadore.

As faithful as Hill and scribe Stephen Geller are to Vonnegut's text, however, as visual spectacle it doesn't quite compare to the exuberance of the novel, which is arguably due to Hill's formalism. Go to Full Review

About as close an adaptation to Vonnegut's humanist triumph as possible. A moving work despite its flaws. Go to Full Review

It's a helluva lot easier to adapt, say, Stephen King than Kurt Vonnegut, yet director George Roy Hill and scripter Stephen Geller do such an exquisite job with Slaughterhouse-Five that even Vonnegut himself raved about this celluloid interpretation. Go to Full Review

The film captures the essence of the book even while diverging from it. Vonnegut himself always claimed to be extremely pleased with it. Go to Full Review

Kylo W Mar 17, 2018 Odd, mesmerising, funny and still able to keep invested. Every jump between times are as confusing to us, as is to Billy; the music doesn't distract, while also hinting at Billy's inner feelings. This film has successfully adapted a deep-layered novel without taking much liberties. See more
Abraham S Jun 7, 2017 Hmmm, I might have to sit on the critique fence for this one. Based on the original novel by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, this is a non-linear film about a man named Billy Pilgrim who travels back and forth in time. The non-linear sci-fi narrative could certainly have been a precursor to recent Hollywood films like The Time Traveller's Wife and About Time but I didn't find it engrossing or satisfying upon first viewing. It is quite possibly a matter of watching it again to appreciate whatever nuances I have missed but it feels slightly underwhelming especially after George Roy Hill's previous achievements such as Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid.
